Thread regarding Follett layoffs

There are many reasons why Follett retail model failed

follett operated a retail shell game. They'd use the cost of acquiring a new store to offset the costs of existing stores. They'd heap re-model costs, management costs, training costs on the the new contract All of the labor came in the form of high priced senior staff from other area stores. The donating stores were relieved of their high priced salary for a few weeks a year. If there was a log retail plan, follett's business model worked.
Students found better deals online. They found online buyers for the used books. They learned they weren't captive any longer. They also learned that even if the professor wanted the newest edition of text, the older texts would still work. They discovered torrenting books worked. They found solutions to the skyrocketing cost of education. If gasoline prices increased at the same pace education and educational materials costs increased, we'd have found many alternatives to the gasoline engine by now.

This is hard for me to say, but I find my job to be unsustainable. I do agree with all of your points. Could the processes been upgraded to compensate for the extra amount of work we’re doing? No.

Great post @OP+175AXOJT. These are excellent points and summarize Follett's demise over the past 15 years. The most concerning part for Follett family and employees still with Follett is what will change to make Follett sales grow and enable Follett to make a profit. Industries change, Follett did not. When companies don't change, new competitors enter the market to feel the demand. There is really no hope. Not only does Follett treat employees poorly, but also vendors and customers. That is not a recipe for success in any business. Financial aid will become open through and "FA Card" and that will be all she wrote. Right now the goal of senior staff and family is to maximize bonus and maximize dividend.

  • th...this isn't like reddit where you attempt to bump a comment you made in another post to draw attention to it or focus back to the thread you previously started. But while you're at it, here's a piece of paper where I've written 'do you like me check yes or no' (I'm guessing no...)
