Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Serious question - Why not run Voluntary Redundancies?

Looking through all these posts, if they are true, we are reducing headcount across a wide spectrum of roles. It's head count driven.

Right now the people who want to leave the most are likely to be the ones in the roles that are the most impacted by Corona and therefore with the least revenue. They are already unhappy and would take a Voluntary Separation for the team. This would save the many highly motivated people who seem to be desperate to stay and are commenting in this post.

Why not list VR's and see what bobs up?

Morale would improve, the costs would lower. The reason people are hanging around even with no revenue is the lack of knowledge of what next, a basic VSP would move them on and leave a hungrier and motivated team grateful for a role. This is far lower cost than spending a year managing the role out if the market has gone the way it has?

Something is up, my manager asked me if I would be serious about a change in role and they are keenly putting a lot of focus on sideways move progressions. Even asked if the current role was realistic. Normally its considered disloyal and you must stay in a role at any cost.

It seemed to work well at Verizon a few years back. People literally had to click a button on a portal. But they clicked the button.

As an HR professional its clear there are no voluntary layoffs.

I took the VSP in 2014 and left a role that had me very stressed and miserable. I went and worked at another company that didn’t pan out and came back to Dell in 2015. Leaving for that one year was exactly what I needed. My understanding is that way more people volunteered for the VSP than they expected.

Nearly every company we are dealing with are making large workforce reductions via a Voluntary Separation Program and they are undersubscribed.

Yes they did one in 2013 and people could apply. But not everyone was accepted. Could be a simple solution to the problem and also see the best candidates for a move or a vsp

they should but won't.

won't be a resource drain since it has to be offered to you. they can select whom to offer it to

They won't because they can layoff and blame covid. why let an opportunity go to waste?

They did a VSP in 2013 (I think) and a lot more people took it than was expected. And a lot more excellent performers took the package, which makes sense. If you’re an awesome performer/great skills, the more likely you are to get another job quickly.

Funny, I mentioned in my Tell Dell survey response that I’d be interested in a new role and now I’m laid off. Lol. Be careful what you say in that survey - I did see they are doing more surveys now? Or changes? I bet they analyze responses and use that as guidance when making “the list”. They need to cut costs, and although the job openings have opened, I bet they’re delayed in fulfilling them because, well, they need to cut costs! If they just move people around, they aren’t cutting costs.

They aren't going for them because they are required to tell their direct manager they are wanting a new role, and currently there is no support for this in this environment. So they are stuck. There should be support for greater internal movement to fill vacancies that evidently are deemed important enough to post job requisitions in this environment.

Last I checked there are 782 open jobs at Dell so why arent they going for them

Instead of Voluntary Redundancies why not offer people who are clearly impacted the opportunity for roles in other parts of the org (and make the roles available clearly obvious and fast tracked)

If the main reason people are miserable in their current role is they are trapped and cant see anyway out without leaving, but they are good workers, look for an alternative to redundancy. Some of the best are now in terrible roles thanks to Covid and we force them to stay there.

Immediate opportunity to move to another role would save the company money and keep the good worker and IP?

Yes, but they wont. They may be middle management or in a role that is moving along adequately so they can stay or leave. But they wont leave when the jobs arent out there.

Thats a great suggestion. I think they would prefer to have the people who want a voluntary redundancy to leave of their own accord.
