Why do people dislike Yammer?

I stopped thinking we were the best when I started reading “Retire in 5”.
The level of financial illiteracy and complete lack of understanding of benefits from people close to retirement age, that had probably completed several financial coaching sessions was astounding.
And we hope those people make good business decisions for the company, when they can’t do that for themselves?!

After the Upstream Reorg, and the team of SUITs disbanded, they anointed the most untalented of the Bunch to become Culture/Behaviors manager. Imagine a geoscientist, without technical skills who had failed in the commercial role, producing podcasts to kiss a–. Highlighting stories of her favorite managers, chiefs, and people she’d love to wine and dine. Awful, slimy, shameful. And someone must have thought that was a great idea and use of time and resources.

Like her those striving to s— up abound in yammer. From the UIS planner who in the middle of the controversy of people being forced to abandon their kids and report to the office posted: “it’s being amazing to be back and see the faces of my coworkers whom I’m missed so much” (he meant his boss). To which the bosses commented: “yes, x y, it is so great”. Like, share.
Not a week later they were exposed to covid.
No post about that.

I guess I just don’t suffer fools lightly.

I don’t dislike yammer. I dislike how people use it. For example, 85%+ of the stuff on “Ask EMIT” can be figured out with a google search.

Don’t get me started. Brown nosers can be easily spotted there. Seems much more after the performance assessment where they have to show “winning behaviours”.. no better way to help their ranking than satin fb “John dough displayed inclusion by [add action] on Yammer”, managers tagged will have to agree! I know individuals that spent an entire day on drafting / finding pictures for a WIN sharing!

Wait—this board isn’t the real Yammer?

Turn the question around: why do people like Yammer, and which people do?

It's used to kiss @$$ to management. To post pictures of WFH, made up safety minutes, how much they love returning to the office during Covid....all of the things that real people despise....

There's nothing wrong with Yammer on its own. It's no different from any social networking tool.

What irks most people about it is the way it's used. Like how social media brings out the narcissistic, showboating, humble bragging dark side that resides in us, so does Yammer. It promotes the exaggerated celebration of small, mostly useless achievements, or the airing of corporate friendly views and opinions which add nothing to our cash flow.

Honestly, I just can’t stand the name. I hate seeing an email that says the word “Yammer”.

Yammer’s not too bad, we could do without the two dozen or so people who are mostly in IT that make way too many inane posts and comments, though. Maybe EMIT should consider an inverse relationship between number of useless Yammer posts and performance ranking.

I have a part time working schedule but doing a fulltime job: no time to waste on networking in corridors or sitting in "interesting get together meetings" or elsewhere or on having coffee with (possibly future) bosses or spending time on Yammer to read of what mostly consists of blowing smoke, upwards (sorry, tried to put it nicely).

Posted this in the other thread - Yammer is literally no different than you guys having off-topic chats in the hallways, IMs, on a call, "ergo walks", smoke breaks, on your phone, etc. So I hope everyone complaining about Yammer is dedicated 100%, full attention.

There is some good information there but some things like people complaining about food in the cafeteria or sharing pictures of bugs it has a multiplying effect...not only there is a person that posted a picture of the bug, then you have the long string of conversations and likes. Feels like lots of time wasted on those things.

Then you have the tooting your own horn brigade....posting about some routine thing is search of exposure.

Cause folks from exxon are entitled fools that complain after losing their crown.

@xcb+170DmtOy - yes! “Retire in 5” is the only useful group on Yammer

It’s pointless and a waste of money used to implement it.

if you use yammer, you need to reevaluate your life

Well this guy @mxp+170p1U97 doesn’t like communicating with others or promoting activities that are happening in the company.

It’s just another tool to be used and can have a social aspect to it. I use it to see what other parts of the company are doing and also get retire in 5 information.

People love email. That's it. Keep it at that level.
