I think it's really time for some change in the organization structure. Right now, it's too heavy on top , you can have one or two sls reporting to a DH in a department with made up advisory roles to fill the middle management. It used to look like a triangle, now it's more like the Petronas tower.
There are a lot of senior engineers who still hold on to the old ways, while the new guys are the ones doing most of the work and getting burned out. You have specialist, principles, complex , lead, etc but all doing the same thing .You can see this in ES. The middle layer is almost gone, and that's causing a big gap and no future proofing. Maybe HR starts to realize this.
Honestly, I think this retrenchment might be a good thing for Exxon as long as they pick the right people. Hopefully they keep the ones who actually do the work, not just the ones who like to talk.
