I was set to be surplussed on July 24th but was able to land a job in a different role. on the 23rd i was verbally given two separate offers for similar jobs but one was going to be a decent bump in pay recouping what was stolen out of my base salary earlier this year. Sounds like a good deal? nope they blocked be from formally receiving the better offer and was forced to accept another pay cut. How do they get away with this ?

Interesting.. I looked into a few open jobs as well, but the hiring mgr said he was told to put out the job so the company can tell Wall Street they're hiring.. But the positions will not be filled. Otherwise what is the point of layoffs for cost reduction if people never leave payroll?
Story is actually kind of hard to believe, as I understood internal opportunities weren't to be an option one way or another this time.

Hope you are happy. I declined staying with AT&T. My family has really taken to our new home in a tent. Sleeping under the stars is kinda' nice. And both my 8 year old daughter and 11 year old son are having a blast helping their Dad sift through the Burger King dumpster at closing time for the discarded sandwiches. Sometimes they even find ones still in their wrapper. Regardless, life is good compared to the 14 years that I put in at AT&T. Too bad you missed your chance.
Before I left I had two jobs that the managers said I was the choice but the VP level denied any movement. That is when I left and that was the best choice of my life. Att is a diseased company. I have been to two Fortune 500 companies since I left and they were total 180 from att and great places to work.
I almost hit 17 years. Everything I applied for, got the automatic decline.
The morale of the story is, as an employee, you will never come first by this company. They don't care and you don't matter. They will dictate the terms of employment that is most favorable for the company. Use this time to find something better outside.
Congrats for your continued tenure on the Titanic. At least you'll get a paycheck in the meantime.
