WFH extended to mid-2021 due to Covid-19

Evidently the folks in charge realized something that our president hasn't: that Covid will not magically disappear. And so there was an email to corporate/office workers saying that wfh will be extended until sometime in mid 2021.

On top of that, some groups (including mine in BBV) have been told that wfh may be permanent as the company re-adjusts and evaluates things.

This is a big change from two years ago when Jamie Van Buskirk rescinded all wfh because she claimed that being in office was more effective and provided greater collaboration – even though most teams are spread across several time zones.

Obviously this announcement doesn't affect retail or guys in the field. But for those of us cube-dwellers it means a lot.

If nothing else, at least this shows that T is capable of making intelligent, informed, and positive choices for employees. Too bad it's the exception and not the rule.

Well, not everyone cares about the employees. There’s an office that’s had multiple confirmed cases and a death (management won’t confirm it was from Covid but people who know the family have) and they are still in the office. Actually, only non management is. The more important managers have all been home since March...

The air circulation systems in these buildings are so old it would cost a fortune to retrofit them to CDC guidelines, now throw in all the other things that have to be done. WTF is here to stay.

ATT bean counters aren’t looking hard enough because there are more techs sitting around with little or no work in district 7, yet the poorly misguided supervisors find it necessary to hire more techs to relieve the techs that are sitting with nothing to do! It’s an absolute joke with no clear direction in site!

T is just following all the other tech companies, they realize the pandemic will require at least another 6 months of offsite work..

BUT BE CAREFUL what you wish for.. If all or most of the office workers can work remotely "permanently" why would T keep expensive older employers, when they can hire an army of younger and CHEAPER and more DRIVEN employees from lower cost of living states, or from overseas?????

No one considers that, but companies and bean counters are seriously looking at their HR costs and realizing, sh*t if we don't need to hire local we can just hire talent from across the country.. So I'll replace one older $200K engineer from the northeast with a senior guy form India and two new grads from the South.. for the same $200K ..

If the new stimulus bill passes with immunity for corporations then things are going to change dramatically. No more mask mandates, no more sick pay for COVID-19, no more quarantines. The company won’t have any reason to care at that point.

If they are talking about full immunity in the bill, they should put in verbiage to cover medical or any other expenses for individuals/families who contract covid if they are asked to go into work full time, is that too much to ask for?
Sounds like a win - win

@ckr: I realize there may be some legal things involved, but if the next relief bill passes the GOP wants to place almost full immunity for corporations preventing any litigation by employees who might contract covid by coming back to work. If that's the case, the legal cause for T deciding to extend wfh or make it permanent is gone.

As far as JVB, she got slammed so hard in the last eNPS over her stupidity that they re-instated the minimal wfh option six months after they took it away. She ought to have been spitcanned on general principle, but in true T fashion, her incompetence, arrogance, and complete lack of understanding were rewarded with a new position.

Don't worry ... I'm as surprised as anyone that T is doing the right thing here. But then again, we all know better than to get used to that happening.

"Shows that T is capable of making intelligent, informed, and positive choices for employees."

Come now, don't mistake wisdom with legal liability posture. JVD and efficiency experts are a dime a dozen in the company, are the really going to capitulate without duress from corporate lawyers?

Corporate liability protection for Covid19 has a slim chance of passing. Additionally, you can sure employees will be protesting in public if forced back to the office.
