Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Most Surplus/Lay-Off( it’s the same) will go on unemployment until a suitable job is found. Remember most of us have showed up to work every day and in time for 30 plus years. That figures heavily into today’s hiring. The younger generations have a bad habit of losing interest in work and incredibly just not show up.

Don’t take one of those short term contract jobs if you can help it. No one will ever hire you for a real job again. You will be stuck working those c-ap 6 month jobs for the rest of your career. Even if your recruiter or hiring manager tells you the job will last 2, 3 or 5 years, as soon as you take the job, it will be 8 months. Eight to ten months with no paid vacation, sick time or PTO is all you get with those jobs; plus they work your a– off to meet some impossible deadline. You’re also stuck working with the meanest, dumbest, most micromanaging a–holes at that company because no else wants to work with them!! When it’s gets close to your contract ending, no one says a word about extensions or staying on, leaving you to decide if you should leave for another job or chance it and get laid off without unemployment because you’re a temp. If you do decide to bail towards the end like I always did, you will never get hired at that temp agency again. But, hey, we have families to support so screw them! Either communicate three months in advance of the contract ending or risk losing workers at the end when meeting that promised deadline is critical.

Most SIPP’s are retiring and most Surplused guys are collecting unemployment and looking for a job. The good news is that craft type jobs are not as affected as some because of Covid. I would be looking at some infrastructure type position (Heavy equipment operator?) or trade (electrician) if I were starting out.
