Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why didn’t ATT focus on building out the network?

Like really SBC? You dumb dumbs purchased the ATT name and forgot it’s bread and butter. The F’ing network. No reason to buy unneeded Directv, no need to buy Time Warner and forget your home base. With all that money wasted you could have laced this country with real high speed internet. Could have built better infrastructure for 5G. But no you’ve got your sights set on competing with Netflix. Freakin Netflix really? Now we have HBO MAX that nobody wants and you continue to lay off the people who keep what little of a network you have left. When customers literally have to bounce from India, Croatia, and the Philippines to get some damn help to fix an issue you will wonder why you can’t keep customers and your debt will never shrink. Sick a Duck Att. F your surpluses, and horrible leadership.

Your best bet is to convince everyone that 5G causes COVID so they support a national FTTP rollout. We can fund it as part of the Green New Deal, and nationalize the infrastructure to keep Stanley's hands off of it!

Will be interesting to see the deployment of the fiber build. In my area know for a fact that a lot of fiber installed with plans to extend to various locations at a later date. Also wonder how much of this deployment is tied to extending the real 5G further into the network.

"new placement $ comes from a different pot than repair $"...... Apparently we can/have spent tons of $ patching the same copper decade after decade w/ hundreds of truck rolls & apparently that is cheaper than 2 linemen, a splicer, & an engineer doing about 1 weeks worth of work placing fiber...so now instead of a 600 pair that used to be slam full of pots, specials, & SLC spans, we're spending $ to patch that same cable that now only has about 15% usage.....(insert hand over face in disgust emoji)

It's like when Cal Naughton Jr. asked Ricky Bobby to slingshot him 1 time so he can win.....if we spend all this $$ putting out fiber, then how are the suits & ties going to get all of their $$$??....just bury those thoughts & never bring them up again....shake & bake

We only have in home internet in very select areas, not the whole country.

And all fiber to the prem 20 years ago would have been too expensive and pointless. Existing speeds at the time didn’t require it. No need to explain further since you’re about 16 years old.

The mobile network is the bread and butter and still is sparse as ever.

nobody wants to buy anything from att anyway so they can put all the fiber they want down. their service sux and their billing is a nightmare so people should run far far far far away from any snake oil att is selling.

@upo+16YlJHsA - Whitaker picked Randall because Randall is married to Whitaker's daughter.

It's one of three things.

1 - They think DSL is good enough.
2 - Cost is too high to replace copper with fiber unless forced to by the government.
3 - Spent too much to become a media company and can't afford it now.

Big tactical error to not start deploying FTTH 20 years ago and they're paying the price now.

Show of hands. How many want to hear an Executive refer to the network as: "just a dumb pipe" .....again,,,,?
Maybe the question should be re phrased as: Which "network" are you refering to as just a dumb pipe? After all, its the "content" that defines the "network" right?

Just like legacy AT&T's delusion of becoming a computer company by buying NCR, this company thought it could become an entertainment powerhouse. And the foolish leadership thought they would be the new media moguls of the 21st Century - hanging with the Hollyweird stars and having deep, deep conversations with Tom Friedman.

Hey everyone had masters in computer science though so we don’t need customers because we are smart.

Fiber ready is when the tv-80 is across the street and drop goes under four drives. It takes hours to change the drop. When it’s done on the cheap thats what you get.

Ed Whitaker picked Randally because of his vision and here we are. Trying to be something we are not-An Entertainment Company. We are and will alway be a Communications Company. It what we do and we do it better then anyone else. Until get back to basics we are screwed ..just like Time Warner after we said we wouldn’t touch it and now we have crippled it.

Randall wanted an easy shortcut! The company paid dearly, however, he walked away with hundred of millions and perks for life!!

Randy told us his 10 year plan. Everyone that wasn't relevant was going to be laid off by 2020 and he would retire with a pot of gold ! Pretty simple , the details didn't matter.
