Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Adapt or move on

For those of us who have made a career of HON it is a fact that times do change and companies including ours is no different. Gone are the days of comradery, replaced by the need for even more profits. This in turn changes work conditions, causes RIFs and creates a distrust for management on up. We are asked to adapt over and over to these new changes and while I wish I had a choice to just walk away - I don’t. So I’m forced to adapt. But I do envy those who can say “screw it” and just walk out..

Its almost impossible to adapt under such conditions. AERO especially in ISC has become a circus where even with a turn in the VP level of Weinberg, Brydon, Ebertz and the likes it has become worse. Engineering has turned into a public relations center, Planning has become a warehouse management department and quality...well, don't get me started with this place where they couldn't even find a root cause if it was staring right at their face. Ken hasn't started to change anything beyond just shouting at his site leaders for getting things out the door as quickly as they can. Another change at the top can only come too soon. None of the so-called leaders deserves their spot from the Arlaks to the Hobgoods.

Anyone who misses Hon must have left years ago before the Cote era and the D-a$$ era. Things have changed a lot from the former Allied Signal and old Honeywell days.

I guess you could say I was INSTITUTIONALIZED. HON was the first job I ever had where I felt like I was “somebody”. Most of the people I supported truly appreciated my efforts and genuinely supported me in return. My position wasn’t as important as a supv or cell lead, but it was vital all the same. I miss my job and my family

It seems odd you lament it if the alternative was being hauled out on a stretcher.
What happened that being carried out was better than leaving Hon?

@2dms – "...when they hit 65 they go on Medicare and don't cost the company a dime for health insurance...." Sounds good in principle but good luck getting anywhere close to age 65. I left at age 62 after five years of being jerked around by this company – no raises, in and out of the elbow (but not on a pip), had band 4 bonus ripped away from me while I was in the five block. That was intended to piss me off and make me quit. It worked.

@1whp...most older employees are cheaper to insure because their kids are grown and gone. No maternity leave. Fewer sports injuries. And when they hit 65 they go on Medicare and don't cost the company a dime for health insurance.

Get your resume out there. It feels good! Interviews are tough because online, it is difficult to read the interviewers. You adjust. Just do it.

For those of you with the DESIRE to walk out but continue to stay, I'm a bit envious. Simply because I DID WALK OUT and have regretted every moment of my decision for the last couple of years. Unfortunately, my job was SO stressful that it was either walk out or perhaps get carried out on a stretcher, dead or barely alive. The message here is, go ahead and think about it, imagine it, fantasize about it, but unless you are ABSOLUTELY SURE of your decision, don't do it. Yes, the environment is VERY TOXIC, STRESSFUL, DARK, BLEAK, etc., etc., but at times, after I left, I felt EVEN WORSE! But, that is just me. I'm sure you HATERS out there will shoot this post down, which is fully expected. I'm speaking to those individuals who are still there and who genuinely cares about their jobs, the people they work with and the future of the company (their future). Y'all just be careful about what you decide. Good Luck My Friends

@1wum – I think the biggest consideration regarding older employees getting shoved out the door is the fact that the company is 'self-insured' when it comes to medical insurance. Older people need surgeries or incur other medical costs at a far greater rate than younger employees. The company needs to trim their liabilities in this area. It is what it is. Age discrimination is illegal but when has that ever stopped this company from doing what it considers expedient?

For those of you that are less than 10 years from Retiring - just keep praying or blessing your lucky stars that you don't get laid-off - unlike myself when I was 4 to 5 years away from retiring at the age of 66 and getting a full pension.
This company could care less if you don't get your full pension - that's why they like to target employees 60 and over. So, I guess you'll just have to endure the toxic and belittling environment and see if you can make it. And don't let it affect your Annual reviews or productivity or you just might be in one of future batches of laid-offs! But it probably also depends on what area of Honeywell you are in - hopefully not Aero ISC where I was!

If your less than 10 years out to retirement, hang in there and try to minimize the loss of sticking with HON. If your more than 10 years out and not leaving, you will be taking a huge loss of pay and respect over the coming decades. Also, be aware that local job markets do label some people toxic if they come from a dysfunctional company.

I can't to walk out. I dream about it everyday and I fantasize about how I'll do it. Maybe in a meeting or I'll sign up for some big project then delete all my emails and files and no notice quit in the middle of it. I don't know yet.

So absolutely true the statement given that it sends tears rolling down my cheeks on this unfair predicament. Unfortunately, I too, am unable to ‘just screw’ it and walk out however much I want to because someone’s lust for the taste of a bat in the middle kingdom.
