maintaining costs money with no profit. why do it we have companies to buy.
@1yrn+16UNkHap .... nah, I am pretty sure I understand it .... since I work in the CO. If you do as well, then you know that we can pretty much run everything in a huge area over a couple of aisles of Flashwaves or similar older fiber equipment now. Ungodly bandwidth over photonic shelves if needed!
Sure we still have T-1s and DS0's still but it is getting more and more sparse as folks can get a good cell signal. I suspect half of this stuff the customer doesn't use or know is even still running in their building! Of-course we have some circuits running over copper to cell towers as well, but not where than can get around it with fiber now they don't!
It matters not to me, I am just riding it out and can leave whenever. I am just amazed how dead all the buildings are now, it is very strange.
Fairly busy in the CO. Always something to do. New turn-ups of transport equipment, decommissions, routines, field assist tickets etc. But I do cover multiple buildings. Oh, still installing POTS. What's up with that?

" You must think like randy and stankey that wireless signals travel from cell tower to cell tower over the air. They used to have microwave circuits. Most of those are gone except some in the smoky mountains.
Had chance to speak with Director in the CO world a few years ago. Blue sky plans was to put as many functions as possible into the cloud and collapse the others into the larger CO’s. Basically end up with a fraction of what they had at that time. No background in that world so most of what he was talking about went over my head.
Well most of the COs haven't had a trouble in them for 30 years....."it's good in here, needs dpo"....
In Mobility, we call a CO an MSC (Mobile Switching Center) or a MTSO (Mobile Telephone Switching Office). I can't speak to CO's on the wireline side, but these MTSO's have been overstaffed for years and remain that way. Most of the people there are inept, as all of the real technical work was slowly taken away from them over the years. They are relegated to being lamp checkers, and running the occasional cross connects (which most of them are OK with). Bottom line is you don't need 5-6 people in one location, haven't for a long time.
i used to see contractors going in there, taking rolls of cable to sell in EBay.. twinkling my left eye.
Yep, all the wackings Ratty and Stinky did over the last 5 years. Many offices are now served by a single person that covers many offices and spends all day running between them as needed!
Good luck getting someone there in a timely fashion if you have an outage!
