I'm constantly fighting apathy at work - it's been a long time since my job was interesting and any other incentive that could have kept me engaged (like bonuses, for example, or even job security) are gone. So how do you do it? How do you stay motivated and engaged?

Whenever i start getting depressed about thinking...i am 56 years old and have been here for such a long time, i just remember that att pays me $42.26 an hour and never has a single paycheck bounced. And after i think about how much i am paid vs what i am expected to do, i just smile and sit in my truck and play another game on my phone.

Step 1: Stop reading this board. It’s packed full of laid off low-performers, trolls, and other various haters full of negativity that don’t even work for the company.
Step 2: Do your best work and be a good teammate. Depending on your position it’s most likely that you and your peers have little to do with the decisions made and overall the direction the company is moving. So don’t sweat things you cannot control. If you feel under compensated then by all means go look for something that pays you what you’re worth. If you are fairly compensated then perform at a high level and take pride in what you do, it will show.
When I start, I had dreams of learning something new, growing in my new knowledge and having a chance at advancing in my new career. I was on a path and for 18 years I was working that path, happy and content with my progress.
Then, I started to notice that whenever I tried to advance, I got great feedback like " you interviewed well, but..." and I found myself stuck. So it was no surprise when AT&T surplussed my whole unit, then my motivation changed. I moved to a new town and to a new office which isn't very welcoming to a new high in seniority employee.
My job now is about the same, but the San Antonio loyality managers all micromanage and they s— at it. Constant emails about how to be better, get better numbers, dont adjust even if its company error, assume customer sales, pressure customers into NOT disconnecting services, etc...its not about customer service anymore.
So what is my new motivation? Now, it's my calendar, my countdown in terms of how many months I need to retire.... I will not just walk away from that!
The alternative is no job. That should be motivation enough. Work to live, don't live to work. All the BS about doing what you love is BS if you can't make a living at it.
I know you’ve gotten bashed on this post, but I think what you are dealing with is depression. How do I stay motivated? Like others have said, I get a paycheck. Am I excited about my job? Not at all. Do I think I have any kind of career mobility or advancement opportunities at ATT? No. Especially not anymore.
Show up for work, do my job, to keep the paychecks coming.

How do people stay motivated? The answer is an easy one - MONEY! AT&T pays me to do my job, so my motivation is supplied in the form of those dead presidents.
My output = money. Money = the fuel I need to make sure I can eat and have a roof over my head.
I rather enjoy stuff and things and not living on the street, so motivated to keep working so that money keeps coming in. :)
Also helps to take that AT&T money and invest it so at some point in my future that money works for me instead of me trading hours for dollars.
the only motivation I have is to do as little work as possible to squeak by and still receive a paycheck. Our group was charged back several thousand dollars because of a commission error.
Do the work. Don’t worry about the BS that you have no control over. If you cannot do that, then it’s time to move along. When you get your pay, every 2 weeks, you and the company are even. Neither side owes the other side anything else.
Gee, I look at Ratty and Stinky's multiple mansions, corporate jet excursions, golf outings, award parties, and political fund raisers they attend with the all the woke stars and I am motivated... to puke!
Why make it so complicated, do the job as required. Do not engage in the corporate bs, it will mess with your head, not worth it.
I do less work.
It's called taking pride in your work. Look into it.
