Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Let’s get real...Many long term employees hang around doing little and getting compensated above market

Seeing anyone out of a job really stinks. But I need another 20 years of employment so some changes/cuts are necessary. We can all point to colleagues (multiple) that do very little and get paid way too much. Literally pushing paper and not retiring because they get 30 days vacation, 200k comp package plus another 60k in pension. If anyone down arrows this they are either part of what I just described or afraid to admit they are.

I came here from Verizon and I’m compensated at market rates. You couldn’t be hired by anyone and get paid more than market rates. That’s why you are being fired. Your entire career was only possible by you s—ing the teat of Ma Bell. so many colleagues feel exactly the way I do and talk about it behind your back. You know you are over payed. Not sure why you can’t admit that. Perhaps because you know it’s true and deep down you are ashamed. And what exactly was your job?

Same stupid posts here always .... day after day.

All the long time employees are "under skilled" at what exactly ???? What skills do we need to retire after working here 25 to 40 years ???

I like how the youngsters think IT work is some mysterious beast that no-one else can figure out ... lol.

Enjoy working for 10 different companies the next 30 to 40 years and not one of them with a regular pension Mr. mighty tech wizard .

Just a question for the OP are you even a Union tech or are you a manager? Just curious it sounds like manager talk to me, I’ve heard it before. Just kind of irritates me that you try categorize everybody the same! I’m sorry I’m not overpaid for my skills... I’ve got a college degree, military background plenty of electronic training! If anything I’m overqualified. I think I get paid pretty comparable for the amount of skills I bring to the table.

Got some news for the OP: You're just as over-compensated and under-skilled as the 20+ year guys you mock.

Get over yourself, Junior. You're not special. You're not better at your job than the boomer next to you. You don't know more than the old gal sitting across the way. You don't have more skills or sharper abilities than the balding guy with the paunch.

Honestly, you children really are just so adorable when you try and play grown ups.

You guys are challenged with grasping my point and ultimately reality. Not complaining or belly aching. Clearly making a statement that many AT&T employees have been over paid for decades. And many are under-skilled. No one is debating those points but you folks just don’t like to hear it. Please ride off into the sunset with whatever riches you have but always remember your former colleagues truly believed for many years that you were over payed based on your skill and the job performed. It’s the truth. Perhaps you need to have thicker skin to deal with the truth.

Maybe the millennials and gen z kids can again try and convince everyone that they aren't just a bunch of crybabys who demand things without ever having to actually earn them.

The punchline is that the id–t infant OP will soon find himself as one of these old pieces of underskilled dead-wood that he's bellyaching about. But of course I'm certain that someone with his level of integrity will willingly quite a job rather than sit around being overpaid as he claims.

Right?

I really don't know if there has ever been a softer, more fragile, weaker, more petty, and more entitled generation ever born.

Oh cupcake, poor you.
I assure you, we (old-timers) will not need a WalMart or any other job when we retire (not that there is anything wrong with that should one desire to do so). So, please don't worry your pretty little petty mind about our lack of job skills.
We will be happily retired, sipping a c—tail, relaxing and enjoying our well earned pensions and 401Ks.
By the way ... We have no need to retire until we get laid off, if that is what we want. We've earned it, whether you like it or not.
So, throw your insults Sweetheart - We are laughing at you — All the way to the BANK!

you are a pompous fool
go get another job if you are so invaluable, no doubt big tech has just been waiting for to you show up so they can employ your amazing talents (and then discard you like used toilet paper when business has a downturn)

I agree our acquisitions and strategy have cost us all dearly which is all on upper management. What do you think the Alien Vault acquisition ultimately is costing us? I also do believe that there is some merit in the point that people have been over compensated for years and therefore adding to the higher than competitors cost model. In my group I can think of 4 people that should be let go.

ABSOLUTELY, ATT upper management put this company in this critical position by taking on DTV and TW for the life of me, I still haven’t and probably never will figure that one out! They REALLY F’d up Big time! Guess who’s footing the bill for those mistakes...

Without the old-timers ( skilled workers ) you wouldn’t have a job. So work on taking care of yourself and learning from skilled people that know how to survive in tough times. This may help you in ways that you don’t even know exist. Hard times are things that veterans have seen come and go many times before and we are not still around because sat on our asses. Yah feel me?

I didn’t get canned am not bitter. I’m just stating a facts. Too many people have been over compensated for decades and it’s one of the reasons we are in this position. Read these posts....one even reads “ I showed up to work everyday.” Wow. All the old timers will defend their pay and contributions but everyone reading this knows an old timer that has clearly been s—ing the company dry for years. If you people can’t admit that then i feel sorry for them.

Worked smart, put my time in. Stayed out of trouble and showed up everyday and did my best. 39 years later I’m sad that it’s ending, going to miss working. I have nothing to complain about and very thankful that I was lucky enough to have worked in the bell system etc. Wish all you the best and hope the future brings some new positive things for all that survive this pandemic / reorganization and whatever else it takes for the company to survive. All you guys complaining need to do more listening and learn some skills from those old dinosaurs. They can teach you things that school can’t and biatching doesn’t get you anything but a reputation as a sniveling whiner . I get paid for what I know and listening gets you knowledge (PAID) Hang in there get positive or get out.

To the person leaving with 2M. You made my point. “You earned it”. You didn’t that’s the point. You were over compensated for decades based on the job done and your skill set and now you and others are getting fired because the gravy train is finally ending. Your mommy and daddy might not have spoiled you but Ma Bell surely did.

Are you jealous of our seniority? Yes, we stay to get the full pension, all the vacation and healthcare. Why in the world would you go somewhere else and start with nothing without being forced too?

Most of these responses are quintessential AT&T old timers. “I earned it”. “I put in my dues”. Here is what you refuse to accept.....you are over payed and under skilled. No one could go to a competitor and make same money or even get hired for that matter. I’m not jealous and believe me I probably make more than most. I was simply saying the dead wood needs to be cut and that’s what’s happening.

“ Maybe because the veteran employees have their job nailed down and perform a full days work “

Sitting on phone calls, patting each other on the back, cheerleading, fwding emails from your mgmt to your direct reports, talking about the good old days, looking over your shoulder, watching your back, telling your direct reports what a great job they are doing, telling all your clients that you are too busy, telling all your clients you are short-staffed, setting up front doors, setting up ticketing systems, asking for funds to perform a key stroke, trying to figure out who to let go next, come in the office at 6am, leave at 2, practice saying “yes” to mgmt, keep your door shut and hunker down, stay invisible in Q...

OP, please tell me where these paper pushin’ jobs are for $200k, I want to apply. Work my fingers to the bone for less everyday for 35 years. I would love to retire but kids are in college, mortgage due every month. You may be right there are some slackers, but not everyone is. We work hard for our jobs and we need them as much as you!

Hey, remember when millennials would insist that they really aren't a pack of spoiled brats who demand things just because mommy told them they were special in 2nd grade and they got a bunch of "participant" trophies because everyone is a winner?

Good times.

Maybe because the veteran employees have their job nailed down and perform a full days work as opposed to beginners such as yourself who spend the day watching what others are doing and then babbling snide remarks against them at TGIF while bombed out of your mind. You're so common.

Grow up and pay your dues. You want to get to where I am, head down, do the work and stop complaining about others. After years of this groundhog work you’ll wake up and start receiving the perks and accolades associated with recognition. At that point all the newbies will be looking at you as that old relic that needs to retire. So if you missed the lesson, STOP HATING!!!

Grasshopper, let me share some Jim Rohn quotes with you:

"You must either modify your dreams or magnify your skills."

"Maturity is the ability to reap without apology and not complain when things don't go well."

"We can have more than we've got because we can become more than we are."

"Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue what you want."

"Don't wish it were easier; wish you were better."

"You get paid based on your value in the marketplace."

Nailed it! And getting voted down! Too many old farts around here pushing paper, doing nothing, making 100k, proudly wearing their years of service badges...knowing good and well, they have zero skills. Today’s market demands at least a knowledge of tech, if not hardcore tech skills. Old farts have nothing. Will be sad to see these guys go. They will have a heart attack when they actually try to find a job. The Walmart greeter jobs were deprecated. Good luck!

Hum... expecting someone else to make a life altering change to increase your chances at a full career. Clearly you have no faith in your abilities to be an outstanding employee with valuable assets the company needs. You have to point out the filth in hopes it shines the light brighter on you. Sad sad way to live.

This is like every other large legacy Fortune 500 corporation , there's lots of senior employers making bank, with nice pensions waiting for them.. So they have little incentive near the tail end of their careers to leave or rock the boat...

Welcome to working in corporate and winning.. too bad today's millennials and GenZ will never know that feeling .
