Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

FlexForce

I have been hearing rumors that flexforce will be hit badly with the surplus going on around. Does anyone know how badly flexforce will be hit?

There is a reason why FF is referenced as a speed boat going around in circles the gigantic slow Titanic size boat called At&T.

Its not only about solving problems but also about fixing previously created apps, doing things at a lower budget, faster and using new open source technology. This is where the Flex comes from. Moving from technology (Computer language) to technology and doing things faster and better, which other orgs. have a hard time if the employee only knows cobol. Its not so much about moving from PM to Dev.

I do agree, it would be good to replace some of these power positions in the company which are stuck in non-working old school models.

The idea has been tried in varying iterations over the years. CDT, Matrex, and FlexForce, and probably more in between.

Nice idea, but it relies on the analogy that a you can swap PMs and programmers out like incandescent light bulbs. Need to move something along faster? Just screw in some light bulbs. Something else gets priority? Just unscrew light bulbs from here and screw them in over there.

The problem is, that's not exactly how things work. Business problems are more complex and have more nuance than, "I need 10,000 lines of code, stat!" I'm not saying you need people with decades of experience running each and every show, but there is a ramp up time that's significantly longer than a few weeks to get people to understand the problem they're actually supposed to solve.

Flex Force addresses none of that.

And if they really believed that, why not just have a Flex Force of VPs and EVPs and above? Just put them all in a room and grab a few Mairs and Chows and say "You're gonna work on this problem for the next couple months...Go!"

They don't do it because it doesn't work. But they can't get it through their tiny dinosaur brains that it doesn't work that way for engineers and programmers and project managers either.

What will happen to the 4 million dollar ‘flex force’ room in MT which has been collecting dust since March?

I’ve seen many younger flex force devs moved into a group after they “eliminated” the older person in the same group They just have to wait until the person getting cut signs away his right to sue so they can get their severance.

I have heard that FF could be eliminated in some places. So stupid, as there are really talented devs and PMs in FF.

For the person who says if you have “flex” in your title you will flex out the door. That is just plan ignorance. People are recruited to FlexForce because they are wanted on high profile projects. It’s an internal, TechDev contracting organization. I moved out of FF, but I was recruited into the org originally.

it does have flex in the name so they are able to flex right out the door.

To answer the question, Flex Force org is essentially IT employees who are “assigned” to other groups for project work. Flexible work. Software engineers, PMs, business analysts. When my assignment ends, I can work on 5G projects or Firstnet or whatever is available. We just got reorg’d into Chewning org.

I think FlexForce is likely to be hit harder in locations that are schedule to be phased out or closed (like Middletown) . In other areas likely less so , especially closer to major southern offices like Georgia or Dallas, but yeah like everything else reductions are coming
