@zwq - you agree with me and I agree with your observation. To add to the story, the boss has full autonomy in the selection of the victims. The next higher up either bless’ the decision or throws a name they want off the payroll. In my case (Surplus’d in February of 2019) my boss quizzed me on my plans for when I retired. (I wanted two more years to get to early retirement age to collect social security). In my opinion I was selected because I was close to retirement and I had just hit the 42 year service anniversary. That and I would be least effected. In my opinion, he said liked that I was “old school” and I was strong enough in my experience to “do the right thing” regardless of who instructed me to do whatever. Yet it was all lip service. I seen him twice in 14 days, once upon notification and once to sign off on paperwork. I’d be surprised if both tallied past 15 minutes. He called once to “see how I was handling it yet I think he just wanted to see if I was showing up to the office. My last day on payroll he was nowhere to be found. Not a good luck or an eff off. The truth is you’re just a number in a pecking order. 98% of your so called work friends don’t care and glad it’s you and not them. Like you said, the boss will lie to your face and praise you blaming the higher ups for their decision to chop you. The whole time the lying boss plays like he’s a friend. I know karma will get him.

@jut is so correct, your boss will try to act like your best friend, just to make themselves feel better and rid themselves of any guilt, then dispose of you like a piece of trash never to be heard from again after the final walk through. They'll just blame the higher ups and claim it's all because you worked for a big company.

The ones not selected for surplus in your group will be invited to another call and told not to make any comments to you, and act like you either deserved the axe or tell them how much they appreciate your work and how much you matter. blah blah blah.

If you’ve been tapped, you’ll be notified like any other victim. You’ll receive an email requesting your attendance on a mandatory conference call. When you call in, the host will handover the reins to your next level up that will say “All in attendance have been selected for immediate surplus. You’ll receive instructions to log into a specific website to begin the separation process.” You’ll be given the date you’ll be off payroll. Then you’ll receive paperwork you’ll need to sign, date and initial regarding UI benefits and date of separation. A list of items to be returned to the Company, Company ID, Company CC’s (MasterCard & American Express), Laptop with Passwords, COU Cell Phone, Building Keys (Master Keys) and Company Motor Vehicle Keys. After all that you get to spend your last days on payroll cleaning out your office and or desk. You’ll be treated as a recently deceased (Dead Man Walking) or ghost. People won’t look you in your eyes and all conversations will cease and you’ll only hear whisper murmurings. You could actually not show up to the office and no one will care. Sad but true. The Company won’t even respectfully thank you for your years. Don’t be surprised if you don’t have any contact with your boss after you sign the paperwork.
