Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Just heard thru the grapevine that DEG will be moved to the new NEO organization under Juan Flores

Kind of expected this ever since the reorg was announced, but just heard a short while ago that DEG (Digital Electronics Group) functions will be moved to the new Network Engineering & Operations organization effective with this reorg. They will be under Juan Flores in Core Network Operations. Sad to hear this as they were just moved away from C&E to Business Field Services back on 1/1/2020 and they were actually finally being held accountable for customer service. Now they get to go back to Disneyland along with Central Office 4-wall and power operations with the new NEO org. Business Field Services operations will be segregated away from both in the new Business Customer Service and Operations (Formerly, AT&T Business) organization under Anne Chow. Back to the SILO structures where no one can work together due to brick walls, organization specific metrics and "engagement processes". I'm very curious to see how this impacts customer service........

@1coh+15vQh805 Business services installs and maintains EMT’s in the Southeast and we started getting EMux troubles this week. I’ve had two this week. We don’t do any PG/SLC work except for MLT in the SE so I don’t know what you talking about.

I’m so happy we (SSIM) are going to be in separate orgs from DEG. DEG is dead and the techs have lots of seniority. Being in different orgs with different VP’s makes it difficult for them to bump SSIM. I have two DEG techs in my office with more time than me. Word is that Locus didn’t want DEG. Looks like nobody wants DEG. First C&E and now Business Services.

Yeah...Just heard myself. Very disappointed. No doubt the c-ap expense work that NEO/DEG don't want will stay with Business Services even though it doesn't have anything to do with business customers. Essentially, what you will have is DEG techs running around at customer businesses and RT's installing/maintaining E-MUX, EMT, SONET and OTN gear while the "Business" technician in the "AT&T Business" organization will be out at the RT performing routine work on 30 year old SLC systems and running down T1 span line troubles on dogsh*t copper all day for consumer POTS services. Not to mention the fact that the Business tech will have to subsequently trip to the customer premise as well, because the DEG tech only installs the equipment, but won't terminate the customers service because they only work on systems. You can't make this stuff up. This is the kind of c-ap that happens when you put people with "zero" technical background, knowledge or care in positions of authority.

@eir: " Business Services is growing at an alarming rate so their is almost no chance of surplus"...that's 1/2 right for us,... losing circuits left & right to cable companies, direct dispatch tickets to cable repair, "1 & done"(mostly) on ciena units...lots of sitting around all day, but no surplus.

If the threat of surplus had no bearing, I wouldn't hesitate to choose DEG/Central Office over Business Field Services. Not even for a second. My guess is that once the reorg takes place, DEG and CO work functions will start to become integrated very quickly which is how it should have always been and Business Field Services will continue down the path of pulling non-designed broadband (basically residential grade consumer broadband) work away from consumer operations and devaluing legacy ABFS functions and sending any/all electronics work that falls under the "system" umbrella to DEG. Like I said, no way I would choose Business over DEG/CO unless my job was being threatened.

@eir,

I couldn't have said it better. I'm a systems tech. We are overworked , undermanned and miserable. But we have job security.

The answer to this is obvious if you are only concerned about physical work functions. Business Services is customer facing and under extreme pressure from all angles to control metrics for all departments including it's own and is generally managed to the same level as consumer AFO by people who have no clue (This will hopefully change with the reorg to AT&T Business SILO). DEG is laid back, low pressure and non-customer facing. Business Services is growing at an alarming rate so their is almost no chance of surplus in that department in the near future, but the same can't be said for CO and DEG (especially DEG). Personal answer = If I was a tech with lots of seniority I would choose DEG 10 out of 10 times. If I was concerned about my surplus future and had low seniority, I would choose Business Services. Basically, go ask 10 DEG techs and 10 Business techs whether they are happy with their jobs and you'll find that the DEG techs are happy and that the Business techs are frustrated and spiteful.

Would sure like to know this true. Would be a good move to link DEG techs with switching.

Kind of makes sense. Perhaps it will stop all the moving of tickets back and forth between them and TFS. Have seen tickets moved back and forth 10-12 times until they get escalated.

Informative post but with all due respect you are concerned with the company's changes impacting customer service?? Look at what they do and not what they speak of! The chiefs are financially pillaging this company! They can barely pretend that they have a viable long term successful strategy for healthy longevity. It's over..just try to enjoy the time left here if you choose to stay knowing this and continue to prepare for the eventual implosion.
