UOP House Cleaning

UOP has gone under the axe lately. Countless highly competent and qualified people were sent packing with little to no notice. Management claims the cuts will end here, but rumor has it that there's more to come, and almost everyone is fair game.

I am one of those who fell victim to this unfortunately situation. I know for a fact that my direct manager, and perhaps one level above him, had no say in this. And I don't blame him for it. The cuts were fast and furious, and it came straight from the top.

Anyone current or former UOP-ers reading this, I would like to express my sincere gratitude. Chances are you've assisted me or impacted me one way or another, and helped me grow in the process. Although UOP might consider me expendable, my experiences here set me up for success, and I will forever be grateful for that.

April and June 2020, lots of mid career RIFs in Des Plaines.
July 2020, Riverside had a massive RIF. Career Development program cancelled and RIF of CDPs.
December 2020, entry level candidates had offers rescinded after they relocated to Chicago.
January 2021, FOS, TS, and sales support all had RIFs. R&D had VRIFs only.

I worked there many years ago when the place was an amazing network of highly talented and motivated people. The salaries were never outstanding but the work was rewarding. Working with the pioneers in the industry like Don Broughton, Larry Gerhold and Larry Stine made the job worthwhile. The company lost its mojo when they started to outsource the engineering to India to save a few dollars. The id–ts at Honeywell who made that decision had no clue how integrated the job functions in the company were. Taking the engineering function out of Des Plaines and moving it twelve time zones away was insane. It is sad to see the company destroyed. For a while, Universal Oil Products made so much money, they made the Federal Reserve blush...

The comment about vision is solid - oil based demand is off. But Hon leadership is so far up tRumps... rump... they can’t bring themselves to invest in clean water/air/renewable fuels/sequestration tech.

It’s a three way blind spot of Hon leadership - knowing how to invest, pivoting existing technology to new products, and political obedience to schmucks (internal and external).

9 block ranking was not used in my group. They let go expensive people (close to retirement). Many of them had been with UOP for 25 or 30 years. They let go the good people and keep the mediocre ones. They also made decisions based on regional offices. Rumors say 280 positions are eliminated in the US alone and 550 globally.

Well, I'll say that I'm a .... (somewhere in mgmt) in "a galaxy not far away" and can confirm that performance had some input into having ur name in the RIF. Executives made the decision taking into account 9-block rating in some cases but it wasn't the only variable. No, I'm not an executive. I tried to overturn or replace a name and was told nope, decision is final. I guess too much work to get through the lawyers again!!! It s—s! I wish i had been part of RIF and even tried to put my name on the list. Too many good people were let go. Lots of experience and innovation down the drain.

COVID was the main driver for the precipitous drop in transportation fuel demand, but the lack of vision for the future of the UOP business is what made these cuts so deep. Minimal attention and commitment to water and renewables and a half-hearted attempt at growth vectors showed that Honeywell and UOP only cared about short term profits. Unfortunately, those who set the strategies were completely unaffected by the cuts, while the workers in bands 2, 3 and 4 were sacrificed for those short term profits. In the meantime, those remaining workers will now have to work like crazy to fill the enormous void left by all those forced out into an awful job market.

cut pension, cut 401k match, took away 401k match by contributing at the end of the year and only if we are still s—ing at Honeywell, worked long hours for free to meet proposal or sch A needs, meet infrastructure etc. I am asking this sh–y managements now where is all your bd of milestone and quality, and future shaper BS. None of this sh– matter does? I got laid off after 15 years. Lately, i can hardly trust any of these managers or directors how jump ships or plays musical chair and gets themshelves promoted every 2-3 years in the name of organization restructure. Seems like lately structure is chaging on yearly basis. Before those manager or director had gone through almost all stages startin g from fos to product owner or techolongy manager and then would become a people manager. Now a days seems that anyone with buddy buddy connection becomes manager and have no clue what it takes to get done and how much time and effort is made put in by engineer. Those lucky ones who are still there learn from experience, this happens at honeywell every 3 years. Enjoyed and learned lot working with most talented engineers that is all i will miss about this place. I wish i had nit wasted here more than 5-7 years. Good luck to rest of the engineers.

My sources say that ~500 people total (including me) were let go, and the primary "criteria" was functional; e.g. there are specific job functions targeted for elimination and/or reduction. That would make the cuts in the 25-30% range. Honeywell is about to pay out a $0.90/share Q2 dividend. Hundreds of millions of dollars (Q1 total was 636 million) - many times more than the short-term savings from these layoffs. ($636,000,000 @ $100,000 per head = 6,360 people). Other companies have foregone dividends in order to retain talent, but rather than lower the dividend by a few pennies (literally!!!!), they cut, cut, cut and disrupt the lives of real people.

Honeywell is a sinking ship. A lot of rats (incompetent, arrogant, unqualified leadership) trying to stay on top. In a few more months, they would have successfully gutted the company that only 1/10 people is competent or know how things works. Remove the 30-year knowledge and experience of older folks and hire new cheap labor from India, China, Mexico. etc At the moment, there is a lot of shouting and finger pointing in meetings. Demoralizing, with leadership directing everything to the bottom of the ocean.

Fluorine Product is in much worse shape than UOP from a business performance and business leadership position. No one seems to care or is willing to address our leadership issue in FP from PMT for some reason. It is very sad to see what has and continues to happen to the hard working people on our business.

UOP has over 2,000 people in Des Plaines when I was hired.... they are now at about 1,000 and with these RIFs under 1k for sure

Building D will be sold, then close down Building A... then finally close all of Des Plaines as part of the roof top consolidation they have talked about in earnings calls... UOP was a cash cow.... it’s becoming a dead horse.... and we know how that ends... Resideo, Garrett, Advansix....

You should expect cuts to continue. When they say “this is the last of the cuts” they mutter ‘for now’. Honeywell only knows how to cut not grow. They know how to acquire like they did with UOP. But then the cuts began within weeks of the acquisition and never stopped. I had 35 years with UOP and multiple awards for performing so at a minimum I was a 5. Still got RIFd. It s—s but given Honeywell wasn’t going to be changing.... I’m ready to move on, contribute somewhere else and then retire. I will miss my UOP friends but will not miss Honeywell for a minute

Director of our group said the cuts were not performance based but refused to disclose what the criteria were. It s—s for those who got cut even when they are good. It also s—s for those who remain because now you don't know what you can do to not get cut.

I was laid off from UOP too. My manager and the director for our group had no say in it. They tried to keep me since I was a heavy hitter and carried a lot of the workload. It seems that no matter how well you are liked or how well you perform, you could be gone soon. Costs need to be cut quickly. The only result that matters at this time is company financial performance. The actual work you do doesn't matter any more.

Well said. I don't know a single person in UOP who is not worried about their jobs right now.
