Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Does anyone know how severance pay works? I’ve never been surplused before anywhere.

Others are correct. Unemployment varies from state to state. In some (like California) the amount of your severance has no impact on qualifying for unemployment – so long as you did not quit and were not fired for cause, you get unemployment benefits. That's the good news. The bad news is in California unemployment tops out at $450 a week. Yes. In California, with some of the highest cost of living, unemployment tops at $450 a week.

As far as severance, that depends on your seniority and position. Those at the VP level will get a really super fat severance, often 6 months of pay, plus stock grants and other bonuses. Those at the grunt level will see the package vary by years of service. However, anything less than 20 years and you're looking at only a few weeks of severance. Oh, and non executives can forget about bonuses, stocks, or any other "retirement" perks. Those are reserved for suits.

And that is that. You're done, with just enough to keep you going for another couple of weeks before you start to feel the pinch.

But cheer up! At least Randy is getting a $30M buyout plus a $3M per year pension for life!

When I was laid off a few years ago, I did get a 6 months of severance pay but I decided to take it in one check for tax purposes. So I took it the one check in January. Some states does not let you get unemployment if only the company contributed 100% towards your unemployment. If your state does let you take unemployment, then you can start unemployment right away by taking your severance pay in one check.

I had a meeting with a tax advisor and he advised me if I was unable to take my severance in the new year for tax purposes it would be best to put it into your 401K if you can or open up an IRA account and have the company directly deposit into the 401K or IRA account to avoid any complications with federal and state taxes. Because I was just over 55 years old. There was new law a few years ago that changed laws pertaining to an automatic 10% penalty withdraws from 401K. Basically being 55 and older and just unemployed the 10% penalty was removed.

As far as unemployment, every state is different. In my current state, you can collect unemployment if you were terminated through no fault of your own regardless if you received a severance or not. Look at your states unemployment policies carefully. Also in my state you have to prove you applied for a certain number of jobs every week. You want to be sure you understand your states unemployment and are meeting all the criteria asap.

It counts as unemployment. If you get 6 months of severance, you can't apply for unemployment until after 6 months. So if you take all your money and blow it on the c-aps table in Vegas you are F-kd with a capital F.

Management does NOT get 6 months .... unless they have been here long enough. It’s listed on the HR site. Offhand I believe at 10 years you qualify for 40% annual salary, add 4% for each year after that, up to 50%.

Why not offer that enhancement across all core titles and backfill accordingly.

The amount of severance can be found in your contract book if you are a bargained for employee. It would be under the involuntary severance table. Years of service and current pension band will determine the amount minus applicable taxes. Good luck.

Most management will get 6 months. Union has specific rule. Look at HR Onestop. Health benefits are expanded. Union gets paid vacation.

Wow! Two weeks severance for 15 years!? I know people who have worked for other companies for just as long and they got 6 to 9 months of severance pay.

Simple. You'll get two checks – one for your final pay period and one for your severance (probably two weeks' pay). Maybe it will all be in one check, like how they combine bonus and regular pay.

That's all.

Oh, you'll also be offered to buy COBRA insurance for about $1,500 per month. If you;ll need insurance pray you live in a state that has fully funded the ACA.

Depends if management or bargained craft. Whole document on One Stop for management. Refer to current labor contract for bargained craft.
