Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

There is a script for this round. All based on a plan that “should have taken years, but with COVID...”

When I laid off non-bargained team members (just about the worst days of my life, and likely one of theirs), I didn't read a script. There is a checklist of things you have to go over, but it was an honest discussion and was sincerely hurt by having to lose a good team member. I had protected them for many years and put them in the best position I could when the ax fell, but eventually numbers catch up, and it wasn't good enough.

I met with all team members individually, whether they were surplussed or not, and there was no pattern to who got called first, other than who got online first that day. Also, we're not allowed to tell other team members who was surplussed...which is awkward. But all the people who were, wanted to tell the team themselves. So we had one last big team call later in the day where everyone found out who it was.

I know it's unnerving, but the best terrible advice I can offer is..whatever happens, happens. There isn't a pattern to decipher what's going to happen, so be prepared for it and hope for the best.

Usually you get a call, q, ect from your manager or above asking if you have a second or sending you a last minute required meeting. They then read a script telling you that you have been surplussed. If you manage people you may deliver the message to others then get your own call. At least you only have to go threw it once here. Good luck.
