Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What are real HBOMax subscriber numbers?

Been reading HBO MAX subscriber numbers over 2+ million, is that right? read somewhere that 70% OF previous HBO subscribers have converted over to Max ..can anyone confirm. I find it odd because don't you need to get the AT&T hardware to use Max, since they're ending support for Roku and Fire tv hardware in coming months?

@tuu+15Z7McaP You do know that att got sued by open source folks for the interface on uverse don’t you. It was on myth tv which is an open source tv product. You use to be able to get the channel station schedule for free but a month before uverse went live you could not download it for hobbyists anymore. Uverse interface was a copy of myth tv so the company that att hired couldn’t even be innovative enough to come up with an interface.
I had everything that uverse had at home with myth tv using cable and a tv card in a small form factor pc.
Right here is the problem with att they cannot innovate and don’t listen to anybody that knows what they are talking about.
Uverse was doomed from the start because of the so called leaders running it.
So please don’t give Microsoft credit when they have been proven of stealing code from myth tv. That gill bates story he is nothing but a hack but now we are suppose to take medical advice from him what a joke.

I don’t think Stankey will last long. Look for an outsider to come in by the first of the year. The next CEO won’t come from within. A minority will be given top consideration. They’ll be a breakup and entertainment and mobility will be separate companies. HR and benefits as well as training will all be outsourced. The fat lady may not be singing yet, but she’s right behind the curtain warming up.

@lpf, UVerse was actually a good product. The interface was well laid out and easy to use, thank you Microsoft IPTV, we know AT&T never could have designed this. The system overall worked very well until AT&T completely abandoned supporting it and developing it further 5 years ago.

By now, we could have had a completely wireless set top box system with cloud dvr. This would have been much easier to install than these stupid ATTTV boxes and a superior interface even considering that it hasn't been updated in so long.

It seems like the people running this company have the attention span of a kitten watching a moving toy - always looking for the next big shiny thing while abandoning their current projects and commitments.

Let's look at all of the video products AT&T created on their own and see whether or not they know what they are doing:

  1. Uverse. Sure, it was better than cable, but never reached more than a couple million subscribers at it's peak, and had absolutely nothing about it that made it a game-changer. It was a small niche in a crowded pay cable-satellite-iptv market
  2. DIRECTV Now: I don't think I need to tell you how that went.
  3. ATTTV: struggling to find any sort of subscriber base, with a little over 300K subs since launch early this year. It will NEVER take hold as long as fiber connections are so scarce
  4. HBO Max: An overpriced streaming service as a late entry into an already crowded market, and without access for those with either Roku or Amazon. So far a complete loser.

What's missing? Well, other than a single instance of what anyone would ever call a success the one not listed is DIRECTV, because ATT didn't create that. They bought it and proceeded to accelerate it's descent into irrelevance. Yet still, DIRECTV has more subs (about 17Million) than all the other ATT-created video services combined.

So the question is which will happen first: The ATT video options combined get more subs than DTV, or ATT continues to poison DTV until the subscriber base drops to the the paltry level of the ATT video services.

My bet is on the latter.

No matter what the claimed # of Subs are, I can guarantee, it is a losing cause, takes years to re-coop development costs, content rights fees and live operation costs. Since day one there has been a very quiet splattering of self proclaimed successes but compared to our direct competitors, there is a loud roaring laughter coming from their board rooms........ These apps are a waste of money... Stick to phones!

The fact there has been little, let me rephrase, NOTHING, on the insider page about MAX tells you everything you need to know. A huge disappointment but no surprise.

Total number of Max subs would be misleading if a majority of them are HBO subs from traditional cable/satellite or crossovers from HBO Now. That wouldn't indicate any new subs at all. The real number would be standalone subs from new people coming to Max that weren't pre-existing customers.

But expect Stinkhole to use the total numbers and not bother mentioning how many are pre-existing. Because liars lie.

Netflix just reported earnings down, and NBC peacock entering the game with free-99 streaming and tiered subscription services. My opinion on comparing att to Disney: no matter Disney acquisitions, entertainment, franchise, streaming, etc... they seem to always invest in their core original investment of themselves, creative content, their true identity. That is what I feel is the problem with att, there is no anchor of products, services or technology that remains, making it feel like we’re on a rudderless ship.

Those numbers make zero sense. HBO has about 30 million subscribers. If 70% had converted, then HBOMax should have about 21 million users.

Now, if we have 2 million NEW customers who signed up for HBOMax, that would be a huge success, because these customers would actually generate additional revenue.

We will know for sure when earnings are announced on July 23rd. I'm sure they won't publish the numbers, but you can guess from the revenue statements.

T is in a corner. They have to charge the same price as their cable HBO customers or they lose them.

The price is too high for cord cutters so it's not something they will consider with cheaper alternatives.

They give it away with their premium services to cook the books on subscrber numbers to cash the check stankey's big fat mouth wrote to keep Wall Street happy or the stock price will take a hit.

And they won't release HBO Max revenue numbers so you don't know if they are making money or not.

Bottom line, HBO Max isn't going to save the company, isn't going to get the real market penetration the exec say it will, and won't make enough money to pay off all the debt this company has.

Its just an app or you can go to the direct website to log in and watch the content. Which is fine, problem is AT&T has made the process of registering your AT&T account for the free access so convoluted, it's a mess.

Roku and Fire, they want a bigger piece of the pie then the they one they got with the original HBO app, to support the new HBO Max app. They are holding fast, so if AT&T wants to reach million more subscribers they may have to shell out more than they want.

But other than that, most other smart devices are compatible to download the app.

What I want to know is, how many of those subscribers actually pay the monthly subscription fee? With many customers getting it free with select products they already have or employee accounts. You can bet that number will not be released.

Maybe they give it away for free so more like how many are paying customers
