Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Is FlexForce safe?

There is no such thing as ultimately safe anymore in AT&T, but my sources said that J Legg is interested in keeping FF. How is that we 90% of IT is now outsourced with cheaper vendors and offshore.

FF is one of the tools they use to age discriminate and get rid of older workers. They're usually younger and have more current skills and take over projects. Since they are not in the immediate affected work group at surplus time, they are not counted in the "AWG" age discrimination surveys. They will still work from within your group, but not under your current supervisor in the org chart.

On the flip side, there are still plenty of older people in FF that are doing misc "support jobs" that are bait for any surplus coming since these are usually non sustaining to the budget.

Lotta replies in here from people who clearly 1) Do not understand what FF is and 2) have no idea what they're talking about.

FF is a permanent employee organization. Not contractors, not outsourced. Full, real employees. The big difference between FF and the other orgs? FF is a workforce that is unsilod- they get funding from other biz units and work on their stuff, from biz units across the company. You could think of FF as internal contractors, but they are fully fledged employees -> so you get a little bit of the best of both worlds, assuming you're a product owner and you have funding -> you can add FF resources to get your work done without expanding your permanent headcount and then having to keep useless dinosaurs on staff for 30 years because what else are you going to do with them?

Also the mean age in FF is absolutely lower -> FF is basically the org our extensive college hiring program (TDP) gets funnelled into when they are no longer in a probationary period.

Legg is going to use FF to clean up the trash application code that exists today so it can be containerized, deployed, and scaled on Azure.

So yeah, all that garbage the vast majority of "tech" workers left behind during their surplus -> FF is being mobilized to pick up the pieces, likely rebuild half of it because its all janky garbage, and then migrate it to Azure.

There are 0 confirmed, or even intelligently rumored cuts to FF at this time.

Will there be cuts later? probably. Nobody is safe. But likely not until we see how much/little funding the business is willing to throw at the problem of rewriting dinosaur-written applications for cloud scaling for big savings down the line

Apparently you did not watch the Stankey webcast last year or read articles about his comments. To quote “ there is no safe place in ATT”

To the managers that were impacted by surplused in 2020: first of all, sorry, and hopefully a new door will open for you. Can you post where you were in your TSR (salary range)? Were you way above mid point, for example? Thanks

Sorry to say, but in OOR AZ, there are still job reqs open for Network Technical Specialist technicians. So it doesn’t look like there’s going to be outsourcing everywhere!

FlexForce isn't going to make it unscathed.. likely 30-50% .. Legg and other executives under orders to outsource as much as possible and keep only essential staff. Lots of vendors like IBM, TechM etc, are chomping at the bit get some of those contracts.

I knew several Indians who worked in IT. They quit after 5 years because T wouldn’t make them perm employees.
