Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Details re: 7/10 layoffs

Approximately 800 management folks (at least) were laid off. HR sent an email to the affected people. Given the incompetence of AT&T HR, they sent the email to the impacted employees on the cc list, so everyone on that list could see who was let go. Later HR recalled that email and resent it with the bcc option.

I have found in the past that LinkedIn is a good indicator of the scale of the layoffs. If you're active on there, in a couple weeks you will start seeing many, many long tenured AT&T folks actively seeking opportunities.

The layoffs report of 800 or so people on 7/10 were in the new ATS and NEO organizations. AT&T Business and AT&T Consumer also had layoffs on 7/10, we just don't know the numbers. Much more than 800 on 7/10.

The layoffs on July 10th were just the beginning; the lay-offs are continuing, with more coming in July and through the end of the year.

Based on the number of views that posts on this site get it indicates there really is a very small number of employees active on this site and based on the comments It seems a high percentage are union.

In my opinion the activity on this site does not indicate that the 7/10 surplus was very big and if the email with 800 cc’d people truly represents the scope of the surplus it fell well short of what I expected.

Is this because just a small number of employees are on this site, this round of surplus was scaled back, or the orgs targeted on 7/10 were going to be small anyway?

Strangely, being in AIC under Mair (who has 78k+) I only know of one person that was surplused.

All that happened with HR is they shuffled around the numerous VPs. And Santone and Smith told us how to think.

What does hr do anyway. Have they been culled

When I was surplussed back in January, HR did the same thing then. They had sent some materials for resume writing training, etc., and the Webex invite had all of the names listed in the email. In fact I found out a friend of mine was also surplussed from the email list. Very unprofessional and incompetent.

It was announced last week that Summers was out, although I don't recall hearing where he would go. Legg is bringing in someone who was also in WM with him previously.

@len, can you please share if comfortable enough, what VP in LEGG org? He's got four at this time. I'll assume it's Summers, poor guy has been cut on and kicked around so much. I've always liked him.

@pvt, that's an obvious major HIPPA violation, and in this climate, I can;t believe that didn't generate a lot of lawsuits that could win. SAme goes for the stupid stunt of sending the email out to all to be laid off and their ID's are all in the email header. Again, another lawsuit generating error. Even if they recall, anyone can copy/paste and squirrel that data off. Just Freaking Wow!

There are definitely more layoffs coming, I work for a VP in Legg's group and was told that we will be looking at 30% cut in August & September.

The layoffs aren’t over. We’ve been told to expect surpluses later this month or early Aug. I’m an L2 office worker. I do not manage people. I suspect we will see these things weekly to buy-weekly until they get through everyone. Our group re-org’d a couple weeks ago and our new bosses don’t know anything about us or our group. Even though I’ve had the top ratings for years, I suspect that I will get cut soon.

One notable fu was when a department posted up a spreadsheet for update of chronic proprietary employee medical conditions such as cancer, cardiopathy, diabetes, paralysis, etc.

The bizarre part, is that people were actually sharing their conditions with the world instead of either complaining or ignoring.

The purpose of the data gathering is lost in the mists of time.

The eager employee compliance was really typical of the Jim-Jones-Guyana-drink-the-ATT-koolaid mentality.

I saw that email and the recall about 10 min later. Almost fell out of my chair, stunned at the incompetence

I don't like saying this, but these numbers don't look large enough, so yes, there will be waves throughout the rest of this quarter. I could be wrong, what do I know. I have a feeling that I'll get cut before EOY '20. With the way everything is, within the company, and the state of the economy, if you're L2, 50+, 20+, and already Rule 75, then getting hit by surplus this year and taking the lump sum, along with being fully vested in the 401K/Roth, is the last best time to exit the company with max best benefits before certain things go away. Then you can apply for unemployment too. This is THE rosiest picture. It's even better if you're married, and your wife can retire at the same time, and has same/equal retirement investments as you. Frosting on the cake, be 100% debt free when all this goes down. IF you don't get hit, and stay, then what is there to look forward too, as you know all benefits, perks discounts, concessions, annual bonus, etc are going to disappear and what doesn't leave will go up in price. Just saying all this makes me hate Randall Stephenson that much more.

Wow. I hate to see anybody lose a job and not be able to feed their family. But after what I have read on the board over the last 6 months I am surprised. The union has been hammered quarterly by the 1000’s for years now. Hearing all the 40% talk I expected over 80,000 not 800. Either way it still hurts a lot of people and their family.

this happened a few years back in the northeast COR when layoffs happened. the entire list got CCed and EVERYONE knew who was getting laid off. Sometimes i have read that these "mistakes" happen on purpose to soften the blow of the actual layoff with the people. disgusting.

The main difference between a septic tank and a cesspool is that a septic tank is designed to hold wastewater until it is pumped, unlike a cesspool that slowly drains.
