Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

So many Surplus So Little Time - 14 days Really?!?!

OK - I have been laid off in the latest round and after 32 years they tell me I only get 14 days notice while recently others got 6 month pay? I am out of here in two weeks?!?! Really, this the best that a Mega Media / Tellcom giant company can do is 14 days for it's employees with decades of service! You greedy greedy Executives have gone to far this time. Shame on you AT&T. I will go ahead and cancel every service with your logo on it and that includes the Warner Media, Directv, ATT TV, HBOMAX, Cellphones, Internet service and more. Even if it cost me more for the other guy's service, that is the last dime you will ever see from me. I hope the next generation of American workers and consumers learn from this.

The WARN Act requires employers to give employees 60-day notice when:
1) Closing a facility will lead to loss of employment for at least 50 employees.
2) At least 500 employees who work on an employer’s site for 30 days will be laid off. The employees who will be laid off should comprise at least 33% of actively working employees at the employer’s site.

These are the exceptions to giving a WARN notice?
Employers may not be required to give a 60-day notice in these cases
1) Unforeseeable business circumstances have caused a business closing and layoffs.
2) Natural disasters have caused layoffs or a business to close.

AT&T and other companies that did not take any gov. bailout dollars are claiming COVID-19 as unforeseeable business circumstances ....so 14 days it is.....JeffMac has already stated that those surplused are no longer wanted so jobs will be scarce.
Its not like the old days when the AT&T's in house HR would set aside jobs for those impacted workers....now the contract company that handles our HR just processes the layoff. If you were recently notified, your paperwork has already been processed....takes about 5-7 days to process your final check and paperwork.
Every job posted is open to external applicants...so good luck competing with someone probably half your age and willing to work for half of your salary!
If you have been contacted as a candidate and started the interview process...there's a good chance your 14 days will expire before you even get a offer.

Some people just can’t be pleased. Give ‘em a gold one and they want a silver one. Quit whining. You’re leaving with more than you had when you got here. The Lord will never bless you with more until you show gratefulness for what you have now. Get down off the cross. Somebody else needs the wood.

I only had two weeks because I left on my own. got sick of a company with no innovation and telling so called leaders how to do their job. since I left I have gotten two promotions while I was at att i saw people move up by not doing anything or being chosen to give the cool projects to only to come ask me on how to actually figure anything out. att gets what they deserve and they will pay the price eventually or have IBM, Tech Mehindra, or accenture bail them out. lol

Yes it’s the warn act which requires 60 day notice of mass layoffs. It’s been waived due to covid 19 and the moral beacon of the world could not wait to take advantage of that.

So as far as I’m concerned att and their ceos who want everyone to know how concerned they are for their employees due to covid 19 and racial equity can stick it. They sold out their employees in this covid loophole to save 6 weeks salary. They’d sell out racial equity if there was a dollar to be made. Actions speak louder than words.

"...Happened to me as B band in 2018 with over 44 years, but I had the six weeks to find a level 1b (but much better job) with an organization that values people".

“Honestly, so now you've been here 46 years? As an active employee with 26 years....dude, it's time to retire. Really.”

Dude - Talk to me in 4 years, at that point I will likely still be able to work circles around you. When I cease to be of value to the company or stop enjoying my work I will consider leaving. Stick around a while longer and you may understand.

Please do not respond to this OP with reasonable posts. This is obviously a troll post.

“OK - I have been laid off in the latest round and after 32 years they tell me I only get 14 days notice while recently others got 6 month pay? ”

Really? What exactly are you saying here? Notice and severance have absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Go away troll.

If there is first surplus event and later this year a flattening of the remaining organization structure that's left - shouldn't those supervisors who are flipped to individual contributors be eligible for surplus since technically their job was eliminated? Asking for a friend.

Glad I got out last year when the picking was somewhat good. And cutting services will save you money so good call there. Come pull up a chair next to me and grab some popcorn as the rebel alliance destroys the death star.

So sorry, Boomer. Your time has passed. You should try reading your emails. AT&T has told you for the last 60 days that your time with the company was coming to an abrupt end. Let the next generation try to fix the mess that you are leaving behind. Smarter, nimbler, and driven. Enjoy retirement!

It is the Federal WARN ACT. Some state laws are even better. There are ways around it and Trump may have signed something waiving this during COVID

I’ve been here 57yrs. I was let go. I am mad. I was enjoying the coffee and getting paid to do nothing. Retiring in place was great. That and my 6wks of vacation. I generally took-off the last 2 months of the year. Not that I did anything during the year. I will miss this place

I believe the 60 days that was allowed prior no longer applies because there are “not going to be any jobs to move to”. So, 14 days is basically throwing a bone to those affected.

As someone said, the 14 day notice was known and shame on your leaders for not recommending looking if you were not planning it. There was 614 L2 or higher jobs posted after that initial announcement. We definitely recommended some folks look if they were good employees but the numbers were against you. Hope is not a strategy at T. And this as much about reclassification of new roles and comp plan. Expecting another phase in Later this summer, but jobs will continue to post to support realignment. And you can come back at any point if you are checked as rehire eligible. But if you have a rating over the last three years below middle, don’t bother as the paperwork and approvals to do so are ridiculous.

Directors and associate directors over 55 will be happy to let go one of their folks to save their asses. The director/ad/avp positions need to be made in to one. But I dont think this layoffs achieved that. We are still too top heavy.

Have others found that directors are being quote-unquote escorted out the door? I was concerned for my old director who only had four reports. But apparently by Fridays end he was still around.

McElfresh announced about 2 months ago that new guidelines only allow 14 days remaining w the company once surplussed. This was bc previously they wanted you to find a new job within the company and now there will be no jobs for a while so it would be stalling and a disservice to your moving on. (That’s how I understood it at least). But you will get a 6 month severance.

Can someone fill me in. Normally the notice was 60 days not 14. Was this federal law that if they laid off a large amount of people they had to give 60 days? Are they able to go to 14 days due to covid crisis? Just wondering as the execs are taking the moral high road these days. Just wondering

It won't. For Mobility at least you can do better without the employee (and certainly the retiree) discount, elsewhere.

Pretty sure you are getting severance pay. With 32 years you should get 6 months pay. Still stinks to get surplused. Happened to me as B band in 2018 with over 44 years, but I had the six weeks to find a level 1b (but much better job) with an organization that values people.

Hey sorry to hear it, but 32 years is quite an accomplishment, and something that is exceptionally unlikely for those coming after you. Be proud of what you have and not what you lost.
