Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T will not have much internal software R&D.

Jeff M clearly said in his town halls and written email. AT&T is too expensive and inefficient in developing software (we can debate if it’s true or not). The goal is to use vendors for all software development and support. AT&T will not have much internal software R&D.

Good luck in finding a better place for your skills.

Back in the days of Bell Labs and Lucent AT&T used to be a highly innovative company. T would be awarded numerous patents for their creations every year. Highest quality of infrastructure and customer service was the norm. The At&T name was highly respected.

Now, this company is just a piece of garbage. Everything is outsourced to lowest bid contractors or overseas sweat shops. AT&T takes what other companies have created and then devises strategies to use it to rip off our customers with the shortsighted goal of maximizing executive bonuses for the coming year while the rest of the company continues to rot and die. Our leadership is an immoral disgrace.

ISn't that a kick in the head.. All this time, AT&T keeps talking how we're not a phone company, but a software enabled this or software enabled that., but apparently that's not that case. What a load of sh–.

Too expensive and inefficient, this sounds exactly like the incompetent executives, why aren’t they being outsourced?

That vision went out the door when Donovan left.

Interesting point, but shows how much cognitive dissonance there is in the company.

From its own website:

"When you think of AT&T, you may not think of us as a “software company.” But maybe you should.

So, we turned our network into software.

We also patent a lot of our software creations.

In fact, in 2018 we received 1,203 patents – about 5 every business day – and the vast majority of those were software-related.

Software is increasingly at the heart of everything we do. Whether a patent or an open source project, software is the future of AT&T. Software is our thing."

But it doesn't surprise me that the filth at the top thinks they can farm "their thing" out to a low-quality body shop like Tech Mahindra, slap some lipstick on it, and sell it for a 300% premium because it has the AT&T logo on it.
