Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

This week s---s

our group has been informed we’ll be impacted so one of us, some of us, all of us or maybe just me... will be notified Friday morning we are off payroll in two weeks from the 10th. Then it sounds like some reorg action and maybe another round of layoffs late 4th quarter. So if I lose my job after 25 years I’ll be looking for a new career in the middle of COVID or I’ll be doing more work in a new org waiting for the next round. My entire workgroup is basically frozen in fear this week, almost no calls, meetings or messages... everyone just waiting to learn their fate on Friday. It’s not just L1’s, L2’s but also Directors in the mix. Sounds like union side will start giving notices on Friday 10th through 16th. I just want this week to be over so we can move on one way or the other. I’m hearing every org will be impacted at minimum 10% up to 40%

And to think rumor has it there may be another delay, senators are calling out the layoffs, and other places are making ATT hit the radar about the expected layoffs, could be more foot dragging, I hope not

These layoffs have been going on for at least the past several years. Usually twice a year, at leas it's been that way at the labs. Although, this round of FMP's is supposed to be higher percentages and affect L1, L2, & director levels. It's not a healthy work environment, having to undergo these reductions every year, that's for sure. The last FMP back in January this year mostly impacted persons aged 55 and over.

@ajg+15QMf0pN are you living under a rock or something?! The major cuts to all orgs across the entire corporation leadership has been openly discussing since May both internally and in the news. The cuts resulting from a perfect storm of Elliot group performing an internal review of our operations, the financial impact of COVID and the changing of the guard at CEO. Minimum 10% cut and that’s in areas a of the business that make money like wireless, other groups will see 20-30% headcount reductions. Union is being given numbers this week, managers get notifications Friday. This is the big one folks, Stankey is going to make a splash right out of the gate.

As much as this week s—s, I just hope that the notices do go out on Friday so we know about this round and can settle back into some form of normalcy for a few months.

"T people, I’ve been with this company since early 1985 and it has been like this my entire career! If you survive the giullotine this round, it’s best you get yourself trained as much as possible and then think about moving on! This uncertainty is plain brutal and it never ends year after year after 35 years!"

What an environment is right - I have been with 2 fortune 500 companies since I left and both were 180 degrees from the way att operates. I have asked many people and no company operates like att. the only industry that comes close is the defense industry and that is just because it is so contractual but they still don't operate like att.

there is an underlying disease at att and until they clean senior management and start operating differently it will continue. there is no reason why they operate like they do. they keep hiring friends and family and give them jobs that people already there can do and that creates massive waste.
att is just a cesspool.

What orgs are you talking about with major cuts coming?

All I know is abfs is apparently expecting a lot of work coming their way and I guess they are staffing up now in preparation. Apparently they also landed Burger King and will be installing those big outdoor electronic boards. Didn't even know we did that kind of work. Anyway, I'm not aware of any external hiring. In my area , abfs has been hiring internally from other departments. Mostly DTs.

Makes sense about what you’re saying with ABFS growing the business, but it’s still overkill with the amount of technicians they have hired. With the amount of work they have, they’re still over staffed with technicians. Techs are currently working part-time for full-time pay guaranteed 40 hours per week and only productive around 20-25 hours if they’re lucky. They can easily downsize 15-20% and still have plenty of techs to do the work. It would make perfect sense to offer the most senior techs the opportunity to voluntarily leave the company!

ABFS will be indirectly affected due to core bumping. You may see junior abfs techs bumped out but I expect the number to be small. Few are qualified and fewer even want the job. ABFS has been hiring because it's the only part of field services that's been growing. Been very busy with big projects for Bank of America , Wells Fargo, Starbucks etc.

Does anybody know if the ABFS bargained for technicians will be impacted since they’ve been hiring a lot of technicians over the last several months or so? Just wondering how they can justify hiring when the entire company is being down sized? Is it in case they are impacted that it will then be basically a wash since they added a lot to their existing head count? Not a very clear picture within the ABFS organization since there’s hardly enough work to sustain all techs hired!

Of course Elliot has decided that those with a public school education will be let go. They can’t quote Horace, it’s horrendous.

I originally had vacation scheduled but cancelled with the announcements coming out Friday. Wishing I’d just said F it and took kids on a trip this week. Not getting any work done and only coworkers I’ve spoken to ask if I’ve heard anything or how many on our team will be impacted

I want to know how they are deciding who goes? Is it based on how you were previously ranked, seniority, salary, s-x, creed, color, location, pension eligibility, education level, demonstrated ability or some random algorithm the Elliot Group cooked up so John can make his big splash as the new CEO. At this point I’d take a pay cut just to have job security. This is exhausting!
