So managers won't have to face employees until a 48 hour cool down?

It appears that a Friday firing is placing the company’s financials in front of the terminated employee’s health and well-being. The idea though, is that you signed a piece of paper to get that severance, so therefore the good company is 'taking care of you', so-to-speak. You can't get that severance package without signing it, and signing it means you can't come back and ask for more of something or even sue them. Who is not going to sign? I understand that with these mass layoffs, and the reasons or algorithms, etc in HR that selects who gets laid off, are highly questionable. And with that, there is rumor that some sort of class action lawsuit is out there to where a team of lawyers can sue on your behalf even if you signed. Perhaps a Friday Firing can be cause of recourse for additional financial compensation.
I got fired once in the morning. Because I was meeting someone later in the day after work, I ended up staying the whole day. It’s not that great! I had already packed my stuff up weeks before because I knew it was coming. Just sat there looking for a new job on my phone for about 7 1/2 hours of the shift.
There are a few problems with Friday firings. You are giving employees the whole weekend to process their feelings also means giving them the whole weekend to stew about how they've been treated, perhaps becoming more and more resentful. And to fires someone on a Friday afternoon firing is practically encouraging that person to seek solace at a bar. Adding alcohol to those stewing feelings may not be helpful for either your company or your former employee. They know today who they are going to let go. Just rip the bandaid off and get it over with.
Or maybe ...they are trying to clean house?, deadwood as far as one's can see...
To expand on the previous posters comment on stock price.
Studies have shown that when companies release bad financial news the stock price is negatively affected less when the news is released on a Friday (stock markets are closed on the weekend). When companies release good news its better to do it on another day of the week. In the case of massive layoffs this would be a signal to investors that a company's cost structure is not in a good place an insight they probably did not have had before. You'll see most companies schedule their quarterly earnings calls on Fridays when they didn't meet their targets for the quarter.
Either way when companies make announcements which affect the stock price good or bad there is generally an over reaction by the market and a slow return back to a reasonable price based on the new information. Announcing on Fridays limits this impact for bad news than say announcing on a Tuesday.
I suspect it has more to do with finance and the stock, not employee psychology.
There are laws/policies around releasing any news that has a material impact on the stock price, especially before earnings announcements.
The off payroll date is the day after the earnings announcement call, and 14 days back from that is Friday, which is also the dividend record date (the cutoff date used to determine who gets paid the dividend).
That's called a cool down period. Once you receive notice, you are allowed to leave for the rest of the day. At least I did. Then you got a couple days to get your wit's about you and start the grieving process. Oh yea, prevents a bunch of people being mad while at work, and someone get hurt.
Do it at the end of the week to avoid getting the firing manager from getting shot? Really? Grow up.
We find it’s always better to fire people on a Friday. Studies have statistically shown that there’s less chance of an incident if you do it at the end of the week.
The answer is in the documentary, Office Space: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77c7z-y2G4Q&t=39
It used to be do them early in the week, as laying someone off on a Friday, they go straight to a bar and nearly drink themself to death, and keep that sad pity party going for an all weekend bender. Seriously that was the long held reason why not to do it on a Friday. Doing it during the week allowed them time to keep their dignity together a little better, and balance somewhat in finding a new job, and hopefully not drink to much at night or in general don't drink during the week.
