Process MOS Leadership Quality

I was riffed 2 weeks ago, so I'll say this company has too much mos, too much process to the point that completing a single tasks following all the requirements can take a day, and if you do the work exactly as per their MOS and process they tell you that you are irresponsible for not completing your work on time. Leadership is ridiculous, it feels like the leader's have never done the work that their underlings do. How can you lead a team if you don't know what they do and how much time takes to complete a process? I wonder who they got hired as leader's in the first place. In short time is money, if this company cuts their ridiculous process, maybe we will have the time to do more work.

I spent 80% of my time as PE "feeding the beast" with metrics, slides, and checklists; and 20% doing the project engineering workload of three FTEs. I thought I heard TM was a metric maniac.

If I had a dollar for every time my boss told us about our standard work, I could retire. Lots of time when something wasn't getting done it was because we weren't following our standard work, not because someone was out or a charge number got closed or he himself put us on a all hands on deck emergency chart session. Supposed to have that trifold in back pocket at all times. Helping others? Forget about it, not on the trifold.

I agree, I’ve come from other companies that had none of this MOS BS! If you don’t know how to make a process and get your c-ap done on time, then you aren’t a good employee. This company makes me sick with their HOS BS. They will never be a “tech” company. I can do my work with my eyes shut, but because I didn’t fill out all these stupid process forms, I’ll hear complaining from my brainwashed HOS dumb manager.

True. The centralization reorgs caused this. The result is cheaper labor, lower quality products, longer cycle time. Best bet is option number two. Fire everyone and start fresh with new products. Seems like honeywell is now following through on that plan.
Honeywell cant go back to the old days. Few people remember the actual cost of new products in those days. Epic was well named for many reasons.

Today: 60000+ DM jobs are gone since the allied merger.
Most locations no longer have skills to even do program management let alone deliver a quality engineering product. Remember when we had reliability engineers? Good luck honeywell.

PS .. yes i do remember how to build that SW with the CAT1 milestone approaching.

Seems leaders think when something went wrong we for example needed a new checklist outlining everything to do so it won't get missed again. Can't tell you in Quality how many rediculous steps were added to processes to try to assure nothing is missed. Extra sign-offs, etc. Also, we moved to a siloed handoff model vs working together. Then we put metric on how long it waits in a queue. We were more colocated in the past and could bang things out with simple conversation. Now lots of folks become single point failure mode in the handoff string.

Process is memory. It is a symptom of long product life. It is the superstitions and routine acquired by seeing things fail again and again.. often over longer time frames than the employee doing the work has been alive.

The root problem isnt the process.
The root problem is failure to turn over product and people fast enough to erase the memory or even better, make that memory unneccessary.

Same applies for every activity from management to production. Long history means heavy process.
No process means less organizational memory and increased variation.

Moral? if you want less process make truly new products faster. Or... fire everyone and start fresh.
