Basically - office A is not commutable distance from office B. Office A forces the work to move. People from Office B have a "choice" to "follow the work" or be surplussed. How common is this at AT&T?

Yes very common, I’ve done this twice in my 20+years of service....last time it was our ONLY option!
@1iuq...same job title, different job function codes..when a surplus is announced in the DT title, the work group is specified, same way things work for FT Splicer & FT Cable Repair.
Yes they can and do steal work. I was a surplus victim 4 years ago because of this.
The work was moved. The company offered follow the work, but only to employees already in the organization. The contact states that all employees within my job title at the time, within the same GCA were in the same org when it came to following work. The union filed a grievance , but I never heard the results.
Most of the low senior were in the other 2 orgs in the building and lost their jobs. Others would have move, but when they were denied, some took the VTP. I was willing to move and knew the job. I ended up using JOG to stay on payroll. I’m now 4 months from making MR75
Wait I thought SSIM and DEG were both Digital techs. How can they single out DEG ? Don't you have the same contract ?
Just tell them you are willing to relocate and then look for something. Give yourself time to think and plan but don't give them the satisfaction of having to train the other office on your job. You can always back out later whether you find a job or not.
My work was moved. Years later they still can't do it properly. We even gave them our job aids. They even dumbed down the job. It goes to show you that not all workers have the same capabilities even though they may wish it be so.
If you agreed to move to keep your job, they can always lay you off after the move. There is zero guarantee, think wisely about your prospects at the new location.
For those who are young, single, without much commitment, you might be tempted and use your parents as safety net. My advice, don’t do it. Have them pay your severance, they can choose your next relocation on your terms.
They know you won’t move. They did offer you a job with a small amount to cover relocation.
Yeah SSIM doesn't have much work so they got MLT testability & DEG techs get surplussed, they got BVOIP/GPON & Wire techs & Service techs get surplussed.
Yes, Don't share your knowledge, Keep all your RPA's to yourself.
consider yourself warned!
It is a documented step in their layoff scheme.
all the time.
politics and who is liked and who you know - has nothing to do with what you know or your skills so don't take it personally.
