That ATT is throwing employees to the street in the middle of a pandemic is unconscionable, especially when many of its products continue to bring in steady revenue streams no matter what the economy is doing. So, why now? My guess is that they are banking on the fact that the watchdogs are distracted. Monitor the news, and you’ll see stories here and there about companies making shady moves and getting away with it because of the pandemic.
The so-called ‘new focus’ being touted as the reason underlying the layoffs is a sham. The products and customers (and work) don’t suddenly disappear based on an announcement. This is all a scam to get a bump up in the stock price and to make it appear Stankey is shaking things up.
Bottom line: Corporate/Dallas continues to think there’s a single vision that will drive success. Instead of managing all products well and maximizing revenue potential, they want to focus on just those products that are growing. The rest they actively downplay and neglect, losing billions in the process. Competitors don’t have to lift a finger, ATT will destroy their own products. That’s why you see rates of decline exponentially higher for ATT vs competitors across all products they own.
But, it’s the so-called legacy products that Pay the company’s big dividend. This goes on much longer, and I’m talking weeks and months, not years, it WILL be bye-bye dividend...
As far as this fake re-focus is concerned: I hope ATT isn’t banking on the inattention of telecom regulators. And the lay-offs? Workers know their rights. Age discrimination is illegal, along with a lot of other forms of discrimination. Unlike every other previous downsizing, ATT is failing to provide any path or alternative for continued employment to workers being eliminated. So, ATT is going to learn the hard way why those measures were in place that provided employees with at least some options, when they’re suddenly faced with having to defend layoff decisions in arbitration and in the courts. Most management layoffs, because they are per the discretion of other management, are at least partly based on discriminatory reasons. Companies can get away with that when the target is given choices, options, etc. But giving targeted employees ‘two weeks notice’ and telling them to just leave, there are no job openings? No early retirement, no asking for volunteers, etc? Wow.
So, between torching their own products, running foul of regulatory requirements, and having to finally answer for the inherent discrimination that plagues all levels of the company (which will be on display when the lay-off targets are announced) - well, I don’t see a way for the company to recover and thrive. If there’s any opportunity still available to reverse trajectory and correct course, ATT will ignore it until it’s too late.

One reason why we don't hear as much about Verizon is, they did a lot better job of dumping their copper networks off on FairPoint and Frontier. AT&T is sitting on much more obsolete copper.

MVO (Voluntary Offer) can be the only solution to avoid or minimize the mass layoff when Force Reduction is necessary for the whole telecom industry. July/2020 will be the Stevenson/Stankey legacy year in AT&T’s 135 years history to max instead of min layoff in This Historical COVID-19 Year. When Edward Whitacre retired in June/2007, AT&T announced a one-time increase to certain retiree pension annuity payments, an average increase of 3.2% by a group of retirees in April/2007 (per AT&T 2007 Annual Report - https://www.att.com/Investor/ATT_Annual/downloads/07_ATTar_FullFinalAR.pdf). AT&T leaders are less creative than the Verizon’s leaders. When VZ started FIOS in Sept/2005 with FTTH/Fiber, AT&T started U-Verse IPTV with twisted pair in June/2006, and didn’t really start FTTH build out until being forced by FCC for its DirecTV merge condition in 2015. However, AT&T did follow VZ’s Oct/2018 outsource to Infosys with its Sept/2019 outsource to Tech Mahindra. Wonder if AT&T will have a 4th Qtr MVO (max 52wk? instead of the cur 26wk) to catch up with VZ’s Sept/2018 voluntary offer which is 3wk pay for each NCS up to 60wk, with a successful 10.4K of 44K take rate = 23.6% - https://www.verizon.com/about/news/verizon-announces-results-voluntary-separation-offer. Not sure if Stankey and Bill Morrow will be smart enough with a minimal AT&T pride. Remember, 2011 is the telecom landscape turning point year when Stevenson/Stankey failed the T-Mobile merge with AT&T paying the $4B fine (imagine how much extra price promotion can be offered by T-Mobile with this kind of windfall money). AT&T employees will never forget 2011 is also the Stevenson/Stankey legacy year at AT&T 135 year’s history. You may want to compare the stock prices for both AT&T and T-Mobile since 12/19/2011.

Because most other companies don't have Ratty, Stinky and the Board of Misdirectors to drive it and their employees into the ground. Being enriched while the company goes bankrupt.

The exceptions of course were places like GE under Immelt, and WeWork.

Posters on the other sites are a lot more positive about their companies too. They actually like their jobs and respect their companies. AT&T workers completely hate AT&T.

A business has no future when even its employees have nothing but bad things to say about it.

Because no other company treats their employees like att.

Lay-off rooms tend to be active when there are layoffs. ATT has a layoff every quarter so it shouldn't be surprising why there is so much activity here.

They are planning on laying people off this week and for the foreseeable future every week thereafter as far as we know. I haven't heard Comcast, Charter, Verizon trying to cut their people. Yes T-mobile has announced cuts, but in their case it is synergy related per merger with Sprint. It is only AT&T that is clueless and letting people go in middle of a pandemic and worst job market since depression.
