The company doesn’t want to maintain neighborhoods of infrastructure.
The plan going forward is to supply as many households as possible with the fastest wireless as possible. Run fiber to one cell site, cover every customers in a 12 miles radius with speeds fast enough to stream and make calls. Less techs needed to maintain infrastructure. The majority of fiber run to our cell sites isn’t even maintained by us, it’s other communications companies. They want to ship customers devices that work off the wireless network.
If we take the HQ city of Dallas for example. More customers have a wireless speed to support OTT services than customers that have fiber. The company gets to charge more for a wireless plan than residential fiber and now they don’t need a tech to verify sync, do an install or maintain the miles of fiber and equipment in the field. They will build out fiber to gain access for 5G and buildout more cell sites. In the end they don’t care about FTTP they care about getting wireless to the prem.
All that WiFi mapping in the house wasn’t to provide better signal from that modem and RG in the living room, it was to provide better WiFi coverage for CRAN. The equipment that will be sent to homes in 5G markets takes the 5G signal and converts it to WiFi for the house.
