Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

High risk to COVID-19?

I’ve been working from home because of my immune system, my doctor submitted tons of paperwork for me and my job accommodation was approved (by the third party AT&T uses for disability claims) to continue working from home for several more months.

I’ve been told by my manager that because of the layoffs I’ll essentially be terminated by the middle of July so that surplus employees can take my spot. I’m not sure what to do.

Are there any other high risk employees that have similar experiences?

"But honestly, how long is reasonable for an employer to continue to compensate an employee that cannot do their job? Weeks? Months? Years?"

Cowardly downvoter cannot/ will not answer the question. Thought so.

Apparently, you can get hired to perform a job....then get a doctor's note saying it's too dangerous for you to perform said job...and continue to collect your full pay and benefits, while sitting at home and not doing your job, until retirement. Makes sense.

Don’t worry, they will fire you for another reason not tied to covid or your ada accommodations.

I don't mean to sound insensitive, because the OP sounds legit.

But here is my take on it. You were hired to perform a job that you can't perform. And it's not because you're sick, it's because you "could" become sick (and I get that).

But honestly, how long is reasonable for an employer to continue to compensate an employee that cannot do their job? Weeks? Months? Years?

Especially in a climate like this, when employees that can and do perform all of their job functions every day are being surplussed.

The problem is all this bargained fo b—s—. Let’s kick the union out and save a whole hell of a lot of money.

The company may claim your JA, because of your specific job duties, causes undue hardship. The factual explanation can be found here:

"Essentially". No. It has been said in multiple town halls that surplussed employees will not be able to take other positions within the company. If a person is surplussed, they are gone. If your manager told you otherwise, he/she is mistaken.

Did you really "work" from home?

So go to work.
Why should you get paid to not do the entire job?
And if you're getting laid off, it's due to your seniority.
Tough.

Just to add some detail.

I was told come back to store or else get pointed out and terminated.

OR

Take unpaid and unprotected "personal" leave which they said will end up in termination shortly after because of the surplus.

They are saying they cannot possibly honor the job accommodation because the layoffs mean the work from home is strictly for surplus.

"Fake news.
They are not going to tell you ahead of time you will be terminated. "

Fake fake news...

In many bargained-for titles, reduction number targets often come out ahead of time, especially when a SIPP is out. It's not difficult to see where you might stand on the list.

If you're union, you'd be laid off by seniority. Your JA is irrelevant once your NCS date becomes surplus in your title.
