Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The fault does not belong to employee when it comes to surplus

So, I've been seeing some statements around here that blame employees for getting surplussed under the assumption that they should have left long ago and then they would not be in this situation. Is this some kind of a joke? If there is blame to be had, it is solely on the shoulders of the company. They and they alone are responsible for all of this.

The purpose of the company isn't to provide employment opportunity. The main mission is to create profit. I do understand people being upset about losing their job. In the end, executives don't keep their jobs by keepng employees happy. It would be fair to say bad management decisions were made with taking on debt. Shareholders want an unsustainable level of growth. In the end, that should be a big part of the blame.

That's right! Don't even think about blaming the ridiculously overpaid 70,000 union folks that sap the energy from this machine each and every day. Screw the corporate lackeys with their overrated degrees and years of experience leading thousands of individuals in huge "organizations" that anywhere else in the industry would be considered entire companies altogether. Some poor strategic decisions have been made over the last 10 years indeed, but AT&T is a very diverse company and will rebound just as strong as before if not stronger. Are headcount reductions coming? Yes, absolutely and I'm sitting here waiting just like all the rest to see how I'll be affected, but I'm proud of the company I work for and will continue to support it throughout.

Bad decisions by Randall and Stankey have the company in surplus status ever since they’ve been in control. Big decisions with big headlines to fool shareholders into thinking this is the year they’ll change and the stock price will go up. 4G will change everything, LTE is going to revolutionize business, now it’s 5G. Tv product this and Content that, then Time Warner...keep spending to make it look like change is coming. Oh and by the way fire all the talent at HBO or make it a terrible work environment so they leave. See the pattern!!!
Then an activist investor comes in but it’s really a vulture fund - please go look up what a vulture fund is. It’s a sinking ship, my advice is to look for a new job and make sure they pay you 15-20% or more than T does then leave. If they surplus you then you already have a head start on searching for jobs. No point in busting your butt to work for a company that’s likely to let you go!!!

We are in a new world, people are not meeting face to face. You would think, that a company whose core business (excluding tv) is connecting people, that we’d find new opportunities NOW, and actually bring in new revenue. But sadly, the focus is on reorgs and layoffs. Maybe if they spent less time reorganization and town halls, they could find a way to actually make money.

What’s not being talked about is the wasteful spending that’s done like all the TV products. DirecTV is a bust and HBO Max is a bust. They aren’t going to make money from that for a very long time since they aren’t getting any money from other providers when it comes to the content. So it already started in the hole. Best decision I made after many years of surpluses was to go back to school. A lot of sleepless nights. I now have a Bachelor and Master’s degree all paid for by AT&T. If they let me go it’ll s— but oh well...their loss.

AT&T took its tax cut and bought back its stock and distributed bonuses to senior management!

The best elixir for a layoff is seniority.

Automation really impacted my office. Tasks that used to take 8-9 steps are now taking 3-4. Guess the next step is to automate everything.

COVID-19, market saturation, overseas Indian outsourcing, automation, lack of ad dollars, and the Internet are reducing the need for bricks and mortar. The virus is also helping companies functions, departments, and people they don't actually need, and there's a lot less revenue and wealth to go around everywhere. Something has to give to match the lack of money. Is it anyone's fault? Things are what they are.
