Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T Has Now Eliminated 41,000 Jobs Since Its $42 Billion Trump Tax Cut

AT&T informed its union employees last week that the company would soon begin yet another round of layoffs, after repeatedly promising that industry deregulation and its $42 billion tax cut would result in job growth and a major network investment boom. According to the Communications Workers of America, AT&T says it's laying off 3,400 technician and clerical jobs across the country over the next few weeks. They're also shutting down over 250 AT&T Mobility and Cricket Wireless stores, which will eliminate another 1,300 retail jobs.
While many will imply these layoffs are due to COVID-19, they're simply part of a longstanding workforce reduction effort at AT&T. According to the union, AT&T has now eliminated 41,000 positions since receiving a $42 billion Trump tax cut. The CWA conveniently provided a chart, drawn from AT&T earnings reports and filings, that show what AT&T's been up to:

The problem: AT&T's CEO Randall Stephenson went on live television in 2017 and insisted that the Trump tax cut would result in "thousands of high paying jobs":
"These are not entry-level jobs. These are 7,000 jobs of people putting fiber in ground, hard hat jobs that make $70,000 to $80,000 per year...“I cannot overstate how important I think a tax bill that makes the US corporate taxes a competitive regime around the world — that’s big. That’s significant."
That, of course, never happened. And analysis of the Trump tax cut has made it clear that other than making a lot of rich folks notably richer, the cuts accomplished jack sh–. Not only did the package not pay for itself, the economic boost it provided was short lived and negligible. And, one has to think, the money thrown at the nation's biggest corporations would certainly have come in handy during a raging pandemic with 45 million unemployed Americans and an endless parade of struggling startups and small businesses.
Granted that was just one of AT&T's many promises. AT&T also repeatedly claimed that the FCC's decision to neuter its authority over telecom (of which the net neutrality was only a small part) would result in unprecedented job growth and network investment. Again, the exact opposite happened, just like the last dozen times AT&T lobbyists have played this game in DC (BellSouth merger, net neutrality repeal, FCC broadband privacy rule repeal, fiber deployment subsidies).
Every, single time AT&T wants something (merger approval, deregulation, subsidies, tax breaks) it promises the Earth, sea and sky. And every, single time, the company fails to deliver and nobody on any level is held accountable. Ever. Nobody, in either party of the U.S. government, has taken any serious steps to thwart this id–tic gravy train (especially those myopically and often performatively focused on "big tech"). Meanwhile, about 90% of the coverage from "he said, she said" media outlets excludes this grift rodeo as essential context.
AT&T receiving countless billions in tax cuts, subsidies, and regulatory FCC favors in exchange for absolutely f—ing nothing is the story. Yet that's simply not mentioned at all by most large outlets, despite the fact that AT&T's b—s— promises haven't even been scrubbed from the company's website yet.
While COVID-19 will likely provide cover, AT&T's real motivation lies elsewhere. The company spent so much money on megamergers (DirecTV in 2015, Time Warner in 2018) it's drowning in debt. And while these acquisitions were supposed to help the company dominate the streaming video and mobile video ad sectors, the company's actually been losing video subscribers hand over fist. In part due to rate hikes imposed on consumers to recoup said debt. It's an ouroboros of dysfunction caused by high-level executives, but as usual consumers and workers get to pay the real bill.

This job loss has been going on since direct dial started, which resulted in the loss of switchboard operators. AT&T has an near-obsolete copper footprint. Cable is starting at 200mbps. In densely populated areas, fiber may be feasible, other than that, it's wireless. Copper is on borrowed time.

And even in wireless, communications is coalescing over internet. A separate voice channel is being replaced with VoLTE, and there are plans afoot to replace SMS. Automation isn't going to stop. I don't care who's promising what.

The AT&T tax cut was used to pay dividends, stock buybacks, executive compensation and M&A activity!!

Where are these 685 jobs you are talking about? I was on Career Net today and last month and did not see these so called jobs 685 nor were there 285 the week before as many have been looking for quite some time? Regardless, those who do get a surplus can not even apply for another job end of story.

All that BS I told the government to take YOUR tax dollars was just part a BS plan to enrich me and my cronies.

Randy is a politician. He certainly has no useful skills.

You mean to say that politicians lie? I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.

By the way, how old are you?

So let me create a lot of debt, bail at the most critical moment with my millions, then tell everyone this was inevitable and I'm a hero for saving the company.

All that BS I told the government to take YOUR tax dollars was just part a BS plan to enrich me and my cronies.

You are incorrect my friend. AT&T has not added NET jobs to their corporate portfolio. They had a NET Loss if jobs which, drumroll please, means they lost jobs. If you compare Comcast to AT&T, Comcast is the winner with the addition of 15-30k positions in the same 4 year period as AT&T. And per corporate communication as of today the whole prospectus of the company is Wireless, Fiber Fed & Software. This should lay it out to anyone doubting their future with this outfit. They want and will shut off the switch to all traditional services. Remember now that the fancy new and improved DSL called IPDSL is one of those services, POTS, data, VOIP, all of it gone. Yes this is what they want and they will do it regardless of regulatory issues or customers. All anyone out there in rural areas can hope for is SpaceX StarLink. And when they come online AT&T will then die.

At any given time their are 600-700 L1or higher jobs posted until the last month it went down to 285 then last week went back up and today it’s 685 jobs. People fail to realize they hire in one area and layoff in others. Yes, this coming round is a little different than ever before but what Randal said was correct. We gained more employees over the last 4 years. You are only looking at Union jobs cut not anything else hired. IHX has thousands of employees and national business is over 2k(although that is probably going down in 2-3weeks) many of them brand new fiber sellers since those tax cuts making $80-120k when hitting goals. Don’t loose sight of what is really going on. The tax cuts helped AT&T stay afloat for another few years instead of cuts a few years ago.

The job cuts has more to do with the direction technology is going as far as technicians go. Add to the fact that large sized investors are rushing the company to cut down the debt. You gotta remember now, ATT is still a very profitable company. They can afford to cut that debt down over time but they are being rushed by firms such as Elliott Management.

Easy. He simply says that without the tax cut, layoffs would have been 7,000 more.

Can you prove that is not the case? Game over.

The only jobs Randall created where in india. I'm not sure how that qualifies as 'thousands of high paying jobs', unless he meant in Indian currency.

That comment that he made may have slowed the layoffs down a little. He surely regrets saying it. Sure has been repeated many times in the press. Never on network tv.

The tax cuts are for the EXECs , not employees.

Didn't learn that lesson with Regan?

Maybe just not UNION jobs. Many other groups have been growing and hiring.

The only position hiring I am aware of are the in home experts. This is basically a door to door sales job.
