What is the BFD about checking your email while on furlough? I admit it, I do get some personal email on the HW email (I've had the email account for as long as there has been email). So what if I check it for personal emails? That sets a bit on some server and they fire me? Maybe some legal thing that HW is covering their a$$?

And no matter how special you think that you are, they darn sure will.
Last furlough 2 people I know of were terminated for 1 - using their phone for personal call and the other was checking for a personal email. They use any excuse to fire you.
I’m not a lawyer but I also believe it’s a CYA thing so your manager can’t pressure you to continue to work (off the books) while you’re officially on furlough. They could get into deep s%*% with government if that employee is claiming unemployment while still doing unofficial work.
Could I see some managers TRYING to do something sneaky and underhanded like that? Yes ... yes I can.
If you do any work at all they are legally bound to compensate you. That's why they've given a directive to do no work no matter what it is.
So that covers them. If you do, likely termination.
It's a simple concept.
Try it. Let us know the result.
It probably has to do with legal liability. That is why they make you acknowledge the you agree to disengage from work. Enjoy your time off. File for unemployment. Your emails will all be waiting for you when you return. Your personal connections know how to get a hold of you.
Very easy to tell if they are business or personal. If they are on your business computer, they are business, and you're working. If they are on your business computer and they are personal, you are fired. It really isn't difficult to understand that business computers are for business and are the property of the business that issues them. And it isn't that difficult to get your personal email on your personal device. What is the BFD?
Logging onto a company email server is business. And you WILL be fired. Seen it once. Don't need to see the sequel. That guy didn't think it was a BFD either. Let us know how it works out for you.
No Conspiracy here. Legal definition of how your paid as a salaried employee. You work. You get paid. No easy way to tell if your emails are personal or for business.
