Question is - to volunteer or not to volunteer? In the recent past those I know who volunteered didn't get picked. You send message you want out so Hon assumes - if you don't get RIF you will quit. (not a Johnnie Cochran quote) All were older with many years. I think Hon will do everything to - keep expenses down. Make the older folks retire on their own. I am ready to go.

Guys, be aware of sophisticated encryption techniques. Don’t assume that copying and pasting is unmonitored.

Outer elbow reassessments are starting next week. Seems logical that people in the outers might be among the first to be considered for targeted census reductions.

I just saw this euphemism and I'm impressed with his language choice. It fits right into an Orwell novel.

Taken all steps to protect employees ... bold lie. Compare to Amazon who is actually trying. News outlets saying Amazon message was
plans to spend all of its profit for the second quarter of this year, an estimated $4 billion, on its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

So about that 670M dividend?
Get real. Honeywell leaders wonder why they cant break through... it is because they are cowards focused on the short term profit. Put the pain where it belongs... on the investors who signed up for risk.

UPDATE ON FIRST-QUARTER PERFORMANCE AND ONGOING PRIORITIES

DARIUS ADAMCZYK | CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Earlier today, we announced that despite a rapidly deteriorating environment and a sales decline of 5% in the first quarter, we performed at or above previously communicated guidance on operating profit growth, segment profit growth, segment margin expansion, and earnings per share growth. For further details about our performance, read our press release. I would like to thank all of you for your continued hard work, dedication, and focus under exceedingly difficult circumstances to support each other and our customers, and to help our company keep moving forward.

Without a doubt, the COVID-19 pandemic has upended business as usual and will continue to have pervasive impacts on our employees, customers, and suppliers. In addition, there are many among us who are experiencing the personal effects this crisis is having on family members, friends, and neighbors. We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those who have been personally affected.

Looking Toward Second Quarter

Because we only experienced the full effects of the COVID-19 pandemic for much of the month of March, the impact of the pandemic and economic downturn on the first quarter was far less than it will likely be in the second quarter. We expect that the second quarter will be characterized by continued weaker demand in key segments, supply chain headwinds, and customer site disruptions across all our businesses. As a result, sales will likely decrease by double digits on a year-over-year basis.

We will try to offset this anticipated loss in revenue through more aggressive demand generation, especially in areas where our markets are healthier and less affected by the downturn. We have already redeployed and refocused about 1,000 of our sales colleagues to align them to areas where we are seeing market demand. Our sellers have embraced the challenge to drive demand generation, even in an environment that requires mostly remote contact.

We also can expect that further cost reductions will be needed to preserve the long-term viability of the company. To date, we have implemented a series of measures to conserve cash and reduce costs – again, with the purpose of preserving jobs. We eliminated or sharply reduced discretionary expenses, canceled merit increases, and implemented unpaid leave or shortened work weeks across much of the company, with variances across businesses based on their individual situations. All executives, up through and including senior staff and the Board of Directors, will have reduced pay this year and substantially lower incentive payouts for 2020.

I want to assure you that none of these decisions were made lightly and that I recognize and appreciate the sacrifices each of you has made to help our company. I also regret that we will need to do more to reduce costs in light of the sales decline we are experiencing, and some of these further cost reductions will likely take the form of targeted census reductions that will vary by business. We have taken many steps to try to preserve as many jobs as possible in the current environment and will continue to do so, but we should all recognize the seriousness of the unprecedented combination of the global public health and economic crisis we are facing – and the fact that the situation is ongoing and far from resolved.

Our Employees Remain Our Top Priority

Because the health and safety of our workforce remains our top priority, we implemented several precautionary measures in the first quarter to keep our colleagues safe. At this time, most of our employees are working from home. Every closed site is now developing a plan to allow its workforce to safely return to the workplace once any relevant government restrictions are lifted and the risk of virus transmission is low with the appropriate protocols in place. We will have safety provisions tailored to the specific needs of each site, including social distancing and frequent cleaning procedures. The decision to reopen a workplace will be made by the Crisis Management Team and will be made on a site-by-site basis. Non-manufacturing employees will receive notice at least 72 hours in advance of a site reopening along with specific instructions on the health and safety rules for that site that they will be expected to follow closely.

At locations where work cannot be performed remotely, such as manufacturing sites, we instituted measures such as restricting or eliminating visitors, enhancing site cleaning and sanitation procedures, staggering shifts and breaks, and putting in place safe-distance practices where possible. Where social distancing isn’t possible, we have provided employees with protective masks, implemented regular health checks, and taken other site-specific actions. As always, we will continue to comply with all local and national guidance from governments and health authorities.

To further assist employees, we will pay for coronavirus testing and out-of-pocket treatment costs for employees in our medical plans. We have also suspended our U.S. non-exempt sick leave policy, under which sick time is accrued with each pay period, until January 1, 2021. This means covered employees will have 56 hours of paid sick time available all at once. This past week, we announced that we will pay for private medical treatment for Bands 0 and 2 employees in Mexico who wouldn’t otherwise have access to reliable care. We also announced a $10 million Employee Relief Fund to help primarily Bands 0 and 2 employees worldwide. One-time relief payments from that fund will be distributed starting next week.

Supporting Those Working on the Frontlines

In support of workers at the forefront of battling COVID-19, we have quickly increased personal protective equipment (PPE) production. We recently announced that we are introducing new production lines in Smithfield, Rhode Island, and Phoenix, Arizona, to produce millions of N95 disposable masks. Honeywell is also increasing production of other critical PPE such as safety eyewear and face shields, manufacturing more sensors used in ventilators, providing testing services to ventilator manufacturers, and producing hand sanitizer in two countries to donate to government agencies that will distribute it where needed.

Although the macroeconomic environment is creating challenges, it is also uncovering new customer needs that we are well equipped to solve. For example, we expect intensified interest for sensors in the health care space, cybersecurity and advanced remote access and monitoring for buildings and plants, warehouse automation and supply chain analytics driven by surging e-commerce, and environmental control systems for aircraft.

While the times are highly uncertain, we have a diversified portfolio and strong balance sheet, and we have confidence in our ability to innovate and move quickly in pursuit of new opportunities. Our strategies of digitization inside the company and transforming to a software-industrial business outside the company are even more important than ever. We will continue to pursue recurring revenue business models that offer revenue opportunities that are less susceptible to downturns. We will execute against breakthrough initiatives that bolster organic growth.

Appreciation – and an Invitation to the Global Town Meeting on May 7

I look forward to expanding on several of these themes at our upcoming Global Town Meeting at 10 a.m. EDT on May 7. If you are scheduled to be on unpaid leave at that time, please do not attend – a replay will be available on our intranet afterward. If you are on the job, be sure to join us. The theme is the resilience of Honeywell, and I am sure you will hear things that will make you proud.

Thanks to each of you for demonstrating your strong commitment to our company and customers during these times. Your strength, resilience, and courage continue to inspire me every day.

My best wishes for your good health.
