Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Prepare to be in the market for a new job

It’s inevitable that deep cuts and layoffs are going to occur in Northbrook and the regional offices. Allstate is plagued with a higher cost structure versus its formidable competitors. And being a publicly traded company versus a mutual means stockholder scrutiny. Allstate is no longer going to be a place where people can “hide” and hope to milk a lengthy career by shuffling in at 8, going home at 4 and generally not doing a whole of anything substantial in their workday. The company is going to get a lot younger and offshore more jobs in the next few years. Of of necessity really. So instead of complaining and lamenting the good old days, the best advice is be adaptive and have a plan on place for yourself when the bad news drops in terms of being let go. The old adage, adapt or die.

Every employee is encouraged to have an internal resume via TC. Take that same resume, tweak for external environment. It is a reality if you can’t relocate to where Allstate jobs are being offered, you must seek external opportunities.

This is true for all companies in this day and age. Everyone should be taking job security very seriously.

That guy is either drunk or borderline illiterate. He brags about his community college degree, while attempting to use 2 syllable words (always out of context) in a perpetual run on sentence. He gives me a headache.

Dear “wake up”, you could really make your point better if you were smart enough to string words together in a intelligent sentence. Is that even English you’re speaking?

Utter BS. Puts and calls I have a non toilet paper degree and employee interests do not coincide with stock value always. U live in some Invisible Hand (uh oh over your head?) ideal world were what’s best for GM is best for world : that’s dead concept and if true unions and labor laws wouldn’t exist including the FLSA and NLRB. Allstate will write you up for using the word Union in the workplace which is a violation of law but they don’t care and poster drinks kool aid (hey gov look into it oh yeah it’s unwritten law of HR so it’s not true). The defenders of company who claim things are rosy for employees are id–ts or HR (worse : u need a pulse for an OB degree rofl what a waste of college get a real degree / job Srs) or HO media snoops.

Poster is correct. Look for better opportunities elsewhere at this point. The company tried to put a “transparent” job posting system in place to encourage people from the field to post for new remote leadership positions. However, the same old school good ol boy mentality still exists. Promotions for management are still just based on politics, not work accomplishments unfortunately. The company is too lazy to review someone’s work history. The same scenario continues to play out over and over. There are better places to work!

Most of these posters have no idea how “stock options” even work. They are tied to the performance of the company. The better the company performs, the better the cash in of options (technically, they’re called performance awards). If you resent that, you’re hoping the company doesn’t perform well, and you don’t belong working here. End of conversation.

Everyone benefits when the stock goes up, Allstate is doing very well and is a good company to work for, too much focus here on executives making money, yes, executives are paid well - is that specific to Allstate??

Forget “Glen’s stock options”........ I care about the stock I own. And it’s about to close at nearly $112 a share ! I invested in my company because I knew I provided great service, as did my co-workers. Looks like it paid off !!!

My bet is that the severance that has been offered in the past won't be offered in 2020 going forward. Just a hunch, that mandatory arb form everyone was sent was just a warning shot over.

So when are the Northbrook layoffs coming? I’ve not heard any specific rumors. During past layoffs I always noticed preliminary research being conducted. In fact, I took part in one back in 2009, where I had to provide feedback on a few of my coworkers. Unfortunately, one was let go.

Slowly but surely they will phase most of the jobs out to Ireland and India while doing away with as many as possible through the use of artificial intelligence. The majority of the decent paying jobs that remain will require some degree of tech know how and will be given to desperate H1B holders from the 3rd world because they will be willing to work for lower wages than westerners. Americans demand to be paid fair wages and to be treated with respect by their employers so why would corporations want to hire them ?

The same thing that’s happened to blue collar jobs is now happening to white collar office jobs en masse. What the greedy executives fail to realize is that slowly but surely all of the executive spots will be filled with people of third world descent and while, like most current execs, their highest allegiance is to money, these new immigrants put their people first above the interests of heritage Americans.

Great advice and truer words were never spoken! If you don’t already have one, make yourself an exit plan. And yes, severance is the best thing an older employee can hope for. I could have applied for one of the sh– jobs at a doc center but I took my six figure severance and got out while the gettin was good and never been happier.

Should those nearing retirement hope that they are laid off so that they can receive severance?
