I have an offer from oci santa clara. Are layoffs done? Debating, whether I should take this offer or not after seeing layoff news here

I wouldn't take an OCI job anywhere except in Seattle. All of these little sites that are desperately trying to join OCI to be in a safe area are easily gotten rid of. The power is in Seattle, nowhere else. Much more likely to be laid off outside of Seattle, I think.

I worked at Oracle for 8 years, including spending some time with some very fine people in Santa Clara. They have some great engineering practices on certain teams, but the business is a complete disaster. Always behind the curve and working in outdated technology. Spending 3 years building some huge application then attempting to sell it is a sure fire way to bankrupt your company. In fact I don’t think I ever worked on a revenue positive project at Sun or Oracle.
If you want to work for them, at least find a job that is profitable for the company. Then quit and use what you learned to start your own company.

Anyway, Oracle should close satellite sites like Santa Clara and concentrate on having employees co-located where they can communicate with one another more easily.

Communication is a big problem with sites overseas working with sites in the US. Different time zones and language issues make it just about impossible to work well between disparate groups like this.

Concentration of people who work in the same area is key. Sc-ap the satellite sites. Oracle doesn't have the money to waste by being inefficient in this way.

anonymity rule - cannot post identifiers (post names or post that many data that pinpoints to a certain person for sure). this one does not apply to ceo’s as they are already public figures.
no bashing rule - can make harsh comments regarding someone’s work, cannot direct your anger towards his/hers persona.

Honestly, Oracle is a sh–ty place to work. You may be hired, but maybe you will just be used for layoff padding to make sure the manager's yes-men aren't affected by the next layoff. You may get a lot of sh– work to do, that is not the area you were told you were hired for. Then, they can say you are least important, so you will be laid off.

In addition, my experience when starting with a new manager, is that the manager will hint to you to do something dishonest to someone else to prove loyalty to him. You are joining a mafia-like dev team and you've got a good chance that the manager is a sadistic freak, in my opinion.

Honestly, anywhere else would be better, unless you enjoy playing dirty tricks on others and get into the sadistic environment at Oracle.

I'll be very honest with you if you were to enter Oracle at this point your morale will drop to the ground. You will enter a toxic work environment where everyone is stressed and looking . Most of the teams are short in personnel so they will most likely handle you the work nobody else wants to do. There are unrealistic expectations for ETAs from upper management and will constantly hassle you to get things done, even when impossible. If you don't have any other option take the job but start interviewing in other places and quit when you get a better offer, don't hesitate. Don't worry about burning this bridge, the ship is already on fire.

in two weeks of being on the job you will be googling to try and figure out if you are actually dead and in purgatory, your not in purgatory but you will think you are. i say do it to feed your family. good luck.

A lot of the layoffs have targeted the ones with highest pay, you'll walk right into their crosshairs if you negotiate a high pay. Stay clear of oracle, you're better off elsewhere.

Don't think your job is secure. Short stint would be just fine but if you are looking to work hard and make a career in Oracle, that seems like a bad idea. I worked honestly and very very hard at Oracle, went above and beyond and my entire group was laid off. Oracle doesn't know how to sell, and the execs are clueless on direction and new technologies. Apart from that, they believe in cost cutting by outsourcing work, even though the quality might not be the same.

If you have a better offer, join that company and work hard. You have a better chance at getting somewhere (in terms of career). At Oracle, it is very difficult unless you are political and can hop before you get fired.

There is no job security. Layoffs are ongoing. If you negotiated a big signing bonus and are fine with having a short Oracle gig on your resume, go for it. You will also get one month exit pay if laid off the first year. If you are looking for a place to settle for 5+ years and career growth, be careful.
