Has anyone seen the movie "the body snatchers" apparently this is what happened to this fool, except that snatched his/her brain and left a bunch bn propaganda.

Has anyone else noticed that customer service is in the toilet? I once had a cashier throw a book at me after the checkout process. Of course this individual is supper catty to start with (male). I guess he just hates his job. I kind of hope they go out of business now, to teach them a lesson.

Better! My store has NO BAGS. How can you run a business when your store management can't even keep up on ordering essential supplies!!! These are the leaders you have running the stores. And they seem fine with it. "Ask the customer if they want a bag";"Offer the 1.99 totes" - If I am spending 30-40-50 bucks you should be able to supply me with a simple staple of retail shopping - a frigg'n bag.

“Be around bestselling books.
Make friends with people you’ll see part time who haven’t been trained well.
Eat in the cafe.
Buy books.
Yeah- it’s great again !“

If you keep mgrs & DMs w/ failing stores. You’ll have a failed holiday season. BN won’t last another5-10 years.

“ You don’t gut your management staff just before your busiest time of the year. You get through the holidays and see which managers are getting results and which locations are struggling, then you make decisions, shift people and staffing and close stores.”
And if you keep DMs & Mgrs in already failing stores, through the holidays, they’ll have a dismal season. If that’s what he wants he’s not very smart.

The changes that are needed at BN will likely take years to implement. You don’t gut your management staff just before your busiest time of the year. You get through the holidays and see which managers are getting results and which locations are struggling, then you make decisions, shift people and staffing and close stores.

It will be easier to get rid of 1/3 of your RMs, DMs, SMs, and ASMs when you have 1/4 to 1/3 fewer stores to manage.

The discount change was an easy one to make immediately and was going to display a willingness to make things better over the long run.

BN is going to struggle over the next 5 to 10 years as they adjust store counts, sizes and locations. Things are only going to get worse in the short term before they get better.

Stockrooms haven’t been the same without someone to manage it. New releases still on boxes, new magazines not going out. Stock numbers off. Getting ride of the receiving manager was a STUPID idea the stores are still paying dearly for. Another company scarfed up our fired RM less than a week after he was let go. If only the company had the thought ,to keep things running smoothly. We’d still be thriving. Not struggling.

Been with the company in various capacities for over a decade. This is by far the worst year I've experienced at bn. Stockrooms are overflowing with product, no rhyme or reason to shipments, model numbers, staff are forced to focus entirely on selling without any time for tasks necessary to maintaining a store. Despite Daunt's claim that store stock and displays will be individually managed, the options for store initiated displays have dwindled down to zero. Managers have talked about coming cuts to hours for all staff. I'm sure a number of stores will close as well. Daunt "turned around" Waterstones by cutting staff, not paying a living wage, and forcing publoshers to discount all books bought by the store. He is disingenuous at best, a condescending elitist at worst who has no respect for booksellers who shoulder the bulk of the labor in his stores. Never forget that BN is now owned by a private very ruthless hedge fund. Lipstick on a pig indeed.

If 50percent off in the cafe and an extra 10percent discount is all you need to make things better for you, then yes, things are better.
Keeping the same sh*tty DMs and management teams that contributed to running the company does NOT make anything better.

Let us know how it is- AFTER Christmas. That’s the real test of who’s standing and which stores will close.

I visited 4 stores and everyone is now identical in layout and book selection. That is boring IMO. What happened to stores being more independent and choosing a wider variety of books?
