I interviewed with L3 Harris in Torrance, CA about 2 months ago...
The 2 people I met with with and the head of HR were all laid off about 2 weeks later - these were senior level people that had been with the company for years.... I guess there is absolutely no loyalty to long-term employees....
Plus, now all of their historical knowledge is gone. This will most likely take them years to recover from.
We have an employee who falsifies her timecard and sleeps in her car. Her "manager" and VP have both been informed of this. So what do they do? -they give the "sleeper" a performance award! Way too much deadwood still floating around L3.
There are general rules for layoffs, and the decisions are usually made several layers away to remove class action liability from the company. One way is Last In / First Out. Another is to eliminate positions or departments, and reorganize (this is pretty common). And yes, you lose a lot of tribal knowledge when this happens. But honestly, if you are laying off, where did all that tribal knowledge actually get you?
There was a case in New Jersey where an employee successfully sued Lockheed Martin for wrongful termination/age discrimination and got a huge award, like 50 million bucks. But LM appealed it and have not heard anything since.
Most HR departments are clever and sneaky and lay a pretty good paper trail. That employee who got superior reviews for years suddenly starts getting dinged and then reassigned to lower profile jobs and programs and then they are laid off.
Not uncommon as it would be difficult to come up with a class action, however the higher paid employees are usually over 55, do you see a correlation of age and release. This was going on with L3 for the past 5 years and no one challenged the behavior and took the severance and walked away, now with 5 years of data, it may be time to contact the EEOC for a class action if the data is exactly what it seems in all the divisions I have heard from. A class action would take care of those that were "targeted" for age and protect others getting to the higher pay for their performance. Best place to file would be FL, best EEOC awards come out of that state.
Loyalty is NOT to the senior and shouldn't be. Loyalty is for the Good employees, new or seasoned.
And probably leave within two years
Yeah, long-term knowledge, too bad... but we can hire some new grads at 1/3 of the salary!!!
