Southern California Kmart Stores Performance

Does anyone know how the few remaining Southern California Kmart stores are performing? I thought Redlands did well and it's now closing. Of course, the real estate has likely been sold as it was a company owned property. But, with so few stores remaining, I wonder how sales are at the others. I've heard Big Bear Lake is a top producing store likely due to the fact there is no competition around for miles.

The only remaining stores I know of in the region are Big Bear Lake, Riverside (Jurupa Valley), Costa Mesa, Long Beach, Temple City, North Hollywood, West Covina, Tehachapi, Ramona, Camarillo, Atascadero, & Santa Paula. Twelve stores in such a large and populous region is really insignificant as compared to Target and Walmart. So sad as Kmart had such a large showing years ago.

The Camarillo store should close and the idea of redevelopment for apartments fits well for this location. A good development project in a nice community. there is plenty of better retail nearby.

Costa Mesa lease wasn’t renewed. How is that store still open. Went in and floors are being cleaned and waxed it looks like. Don’t know how they are still in business with such empty shelves.

How can any of the Kmart stores be doing well? The inventory is just way too low.

Costa Mesa's floor definitely needs some help. I don't think it's the original floor as in some spots it seems like their is old floor below it. It's one of the oldest surviving Kmart stores in the chain. I personally shop there and would spend more money if they had certain items in stock. I figure on average they lose out on about $30 from me from items not in stock every few weeks that I visit.

About 2 years ago I was shopping there and a spiral bound book was left on a shelf and it showed expected sales of around $32,000 for that day. It was in the middle of the week, so at the time it must have been doing decently. If it's down 30-60% in sales daily, I wonder how long it will survive.

Costa Mesa is always crowded but the store needs a MAJOR facelift. Floors are in awful shape (more so than most kmart stores), but it is in a good location and seems to get good traffic, so I think it's doing pretty good (even with it just being a mile or so from a massive target).

Long Beach is much less crowded typically, massive store, but don't think it's doing so well.

West Covina / Temple City, both stores pretty busy when I've been there. Suspect they're ok.

Riverside is now going to be very isolated from the remaining SoCal Kmart stores, so I'd bet they're next to go.

North Hollywood usually busy, think they're OK for now.

Romona is falling apart. Super isolated, store is decrepit and falling apart. 100 miles away from the next nearest Kmart. Have no idea how they survived the last wave of closings.

Tehachapi, busy, but with Walmart opening nearby, their days may be numbered.

Bishop, they'll be fine. No competition, usually busy.

Santa Paula does fairly well due to lack of competition.

@jgt. I am very familiar with the Camarillo location as I live in the area. The Camarillo store could close tomorrow or any day for that fact without any warning. Because of bankruptcy Eddie can walk away from the lease anytime he wants to. Personally, after talking to one of the contractors involved with the redevelopment project, I think the Camarillo store will make it through the 4th quarter and then close in February 2020.

@pwe. I hope Bishop stays. We have a town home in Mammoth and we, along with most of our neighbors, shop there. The store is usually well stocked and the employees are always very pleasant.

I work at that Kmart and I can confirm that 100%. However, even with no competition, things are not so well at the store. We have empty or near-empty shelves and our sales are not as strong as they use to be. Honestly I think after this Christmas things will not be looking good for our Kmart or Kmarts in general.

Camarillo is probably one of the next to go based on the article below. The lease ends in 2020 and the article says the landlord doesn't plan to renew.
