Does RIM = RIF?

Lots of chatter here about reduction in management, but does that necessarily imply there will be a layoff?

1fvs, yes I do remember the days when Larry was the top dawg. Some silliness then also with many first line supervisors have 30+ reports some even on the night shift. I found it laughable when within 5 years of the delayering top leadership started adding back in many senior position titled layers such as senior managers, senior directors and some VPs reporting to other VPs. I think at one time DC had like 10-12 presidents reporting to him.

Anyone around in the Allied-Signal days in the 1990's? Do you remember the CEO (L.B. was his initials) at that time with the edict that there would only be five tier levels between the lowest level worker in the dept to the sector CEO? There were hundreds of upper tier leaders let go.

@10sRApDg-lbr - Lots of "Peter-principle" managers at Honeywell. The higher you go the more you see. Leadership goal = enrich themselves, by any means.

except they are unlikely offer packages to displaced managers. I would also not expect them to match salary. more likely they will force managers to reapply for jobs. they need warm bodies working on charge numbers to make AOP. They don't care about skills.

@10sRApDg-lbr, I agree with you on your assessment. Too bad it will not apply to director level and above. Very few up there with any kind of product, technical or business knowledge; Text book examples of the peter-princple.

There are doubtless some managers who are willing and able to step back into an individual contributor role, some who will even probably be grateful for the opportunity. The majority of manager types who Peter-principled their way into a job where they don't do anything value added will be out on the streets.

It means lowering band, RIFs and any other way to reduce mgmt level to achieve headcount / cost reductions.

Its actually called project "RIM Job"
