The 12 Values that Turned Around Honeywell

I subscribe to the magazine, Chief Executive. It is a great read. In the last issue, the magazine named Honeywell CEO David Cote as CEO of the year. They did a wonderful feature article on Mr. Cote, which you can read here.

Mr. Cote turned around Honeywell by focusing on 12 behaviours that he wanted to see everywhere through the organization.

Those would be:

  • Growth & Customer Focus
  • Leadership Impact
  • Getting Results
  • Making People Better
  • Championing Change & Six Sigma
  • Fostering Teamwork & Diversity
  • Global Mindset
  • Intelligent Risk Taking
  • Self-Awareness/Learning
  • Effective Communication
  • Integrative Thinking
  • Technical or Functional Excellence

Was there pushback? You bet. In the words of Mr. Cote:

One guy asked me, “Why are we wasting time on stuff like behaviors when we need to be making decisions here?” I replied, “I can make all the strategic decisions you want; but if nobody does them, it doesn’t matter. We must create a culture where we’re going to get things done so that, when we agree on something, it actually happens.”
Interestingly, it was that same guy who, two months later, had gone through the teamwork exercise [of] getting all the facts and opinions to team participants who wasn’t, himself, following the behaviors. It became clear he wasn’t doing it. So, I was able to call and say, “Remember that discussion we had about how we were going to work together to establish the kind of culture we wanted? Well, could you explain to me then why we agreed on this and it’s not happening in your business?” Sessions like this soon moved the needle.

So, faithful readers... what core behaviours would you want at your credit union? Which would you borrow from Honeywell? Are there any on your list that you don't see above?

Here’s a little hint if you have trouble remembering the 12 behaviors. One through 11 “do what you’re told“. And number 12 did you do one through 11?

Which behavior signifies "it's your turn to be on PIP"?

The 12 and now 8 Behaviors are a bunch of BS. Completely subjective. Just an excuse for managers to get rid of people they don't like to meet the 10% turnover stack ranking model that Jack Welch came up with at GE. If someone isn't doing their job, fire them, don't make up reasons for managers to throw people under the bus for personal rather than professional reasons. That went on and it is a fact. MSFT went away from it and HNY should too.

What results, you have a stripped down company that is morally and technically bankrupt, with the illusion of growth being fueled by acquisitions not innovation.

Yeah, Jack Welch was quit the genius with GE, (fire Americans move work offshore hide the failures with financial engineering and leave a big steaming load behind for Jeff Immelt to keep going.

Cote used the same play book, and has done the same to Honeywell, let's see how soon Adamczyk faces the same ending.

Technical excellence and getting the job done. Those were my 'behaviors'. Every other behavior was something my supervisor could use to mark me down and throw me in the elbow, like all older employees deserve to be placed. I've let it go. I retired over five years ago. Yeah he got results all right but the corporate culture became toxic. That's his legacy as far as employees can see it.

OP: It's a six year old article. The stock has gone up from $55 to $164 a share since it was published in July 2013. That's several points shy of a 300% return. Move on with your life.

I was PIPed for not meeting the behaviors, mostly some jerk overheard me saying something negative about upper management and ran to my boss. Funny thing is that I was rated "at standard" for results. Think about it.....results good, doing my job.....and yet a PIP. Seems that the behaviors make it easier to PIP and RIF older workers.
