Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

SLB management

After laying off all the people with skills truly needed for oil industry, SLB management now focuses on their next daydreams of digital era and robotics...

Even before the downturn, SLB management was always detached from reality. Why do you need Toyota's JIT/Kanban system when you make low-volume products in lab settings?

What about useless time-wasting processes of SETC that are sugarcoated as the unique SLB's career development program?

During the downturn, while demanding other employees to cut costs, SLB management has poured money into too much BS such as Engage to Excel, Transformation, bonuses and salary increases for executives, and all the M&As, which could have saved many other employees if not wasted.

So who will be responsible for all this BS? Does this company have any future?

Interesting post. Could that explain why one of SLB main clients is building a strong technology, digital, automation... alliance with a competitor people internally claim is dead?

They really need to do something about obese management. Seriously, do you really need managers that only supervise less than 3 people? Managers who are constantly micromanaging to an extent that it feels they are squatting your office, managers who throw at you keywords they merely understand and ask you to implement them, managers who think they are visionary but constantly push you in the wrong direction, managers who keep you just unhappy enough to not bother to really look but never happy to be satisfied, managers who give you hints if things don’t go their way that ‘everyone is replaceable’. Managers who if you think about it, also lack today the currency to keep you in their project, with an SLB stock that is worth peanuts, no salary increases unless you go through the laborious and biased (manager dependent) SETC process, business pull-off from their flagship projects, low new hire retention rates and most of all a company vision that is text book written by a consulting company.

@ZntlNcL-1pfc a few years back people in research were told by the Schlumberger visionary in chief that there should no longer be any more long term (multi year) research projects with undetermined ROI (5+ years), so people’s projects were frozen or cut short, good people were fired by yes men and the surviving researchers had to put on their best platform/digital/analytics/robotics costumes and join the visionary in chief masquerade. Only to realize that these new “agile” departments created by that same visionary in chief are naturally repeating what others have been asked to stop 3 years ago. But with more hype as you describe it which enables them to stay afloat. Until when?

Do you ever wonder if execs and Peons reporting to them ever read what the world and their employees say about SLB?

Here is a snapshot “There are a few too many issues for us to get comfortable with Schlumberger from a dividend perspective. Businesses can change, but we would struggle to identify why an investor should rely on this (SLB) stock for their income.“

What happened to People, technology and profits?

People are demotivated and over exploited by mediocre management.

Technology is in a misguided and expensive Silicon Valley cloud cuckoo land.

While profits are going down the toilet along with the share price.

Abandon ship, abandon ship if you are young, motivated, graduated from a good school and have some self respect. Old farts have no other choice than to stick onto that sinking Schlumburger boat no matter what it takes. Hint: in some cases you may find in your team demoted people (people that were not too long ago at the top of the food chain with lots of responsibility and are now at its bottom or close to your level assuming you are an engineer), that is a pretty good sign to get ready to leave.

@ZntlNcL-1pfc they are doing some nice early prototyping work on $multimillion underwater robots in fancy places around the world and also make dozens of very expensive pristine purchased in-lab robots and drones get covered with dust due to lack of use. Some say that they are now black belts in the art of keywords in their talks.

The positive is that they enable y’all to brag that Schlumberger is modern, Schlumberger does robotics so they deserve a big thanks!

No executive will be responsible for anything. That's the Blue way.

Anyone knows what Schlumberger robotics has actually been doing since their inception? Is it one other A Belani fugazi, marketing/cash burning stunt like Digital and the STIC before it? Great at showcasing incomplete technologies through well orchestrated and choreographed powerpoint presentations and demos. Where unrealistic deployment and commercialization timelines tend to be massaged to appear to upper management as doable, ultimately costing the jobs of many people from other product lines. Share what you know.

This company became the best playground for people with buzzwords, illusions, and powerpoint skills.
