Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

What is the best alternative to Oracle?

I'm done being a sitting duck and just waiting to be cut, I know it's coming as my volume of work keeps declining... I've updated my resume, and I'm ready to start searching for an option to leave on my own.

I'm just not sure where to start, to be honest. All the companies in our field seem to be going through similar turmoil as we are (aside from Tier 1 cloud companies and FAANG). Is there even a place left that would actually be an improvement to where we are now?

AWS, Google, Microsoft, Elastic, Mongo, Confluent, Cloudera, Databricks, Dataiku, Anaconda, Snowflake, Salesforce, Workday, insert company here.

If you're a HW guy, then Dell/EMC, HP, Cisco, Lenovo, storage companies.

There are tons of opportunities out there and everyone is hiring.

The truth is that any place is better. No job security doesn't exist out there. But toxicity in the work environment, at the levels it exists at O, is truly outside of the norm. The biggest issue you will face is that having O on your resume in today's job market is a handicap. I found that the only way around it was to lean into and talk about it in the interview process. I ask interviewers directly if they have any problem with me having O on my resume. Inevitably, they all say yes and the reason they give is that they believe the employees are all institutionalized in "The O" way. This is a good thing. If you can get an interviewer to tell you their prejudice then you can address it. What is better than the workplace toxicity of O itself ... well, let's start with death by a thousand paper cuts, and work up from there. You won't know how bad it is or how much you've come to tolerate until you are free of it. Then you'll resolve to never let it happen again.

Getting laid off there, coming here to ask this stupid question. You are unqualified for all

“That's demonstrably untrue. A lot have jumped to competitors such as Google.”

That’s the problem - none of the big software companies considers O as a competitor.

Congrats I think?

Each person's experience will differ is the best answer.

Yes I am one of those who jumped to FAANG. But it was a pain to get interviews because of O tag.

That's demonstrably untrue. A lot have jumped to competitors such as Google.

And if you put a high IQ student in a bad school the kid is still high IQ.

In my opinion, anything is a better option if you’re in engineering. Having oracle in one’s resume is not very helpful to find the next job.

There is no better alternative. The grass is not greener.

FAANG will be a lot worse. Hyper competitive; fast paced; large workloads and they will have no problem letting you go.

Always have a 3-5 year exit strategy.

There is a reason so many change jobs every year or two: turmoil is the new normal. Ask those people about "job security" and they will tell you that there is no such thing, so they jump ship at the first hint of trouble. The level of job security you get at places like Oracle is the exception, not the rule.

But yeah, if you see your work load lightening dramatically, it might be time to look elsewhere.

If you go to another enterprise (non cloud firm) there is a good chance that you will be laid off in a couple of years. But that's the new normal.

Like 99% of the population you work for a pay cheque.

The best alternative employer is the one that will give you the greatest financial return.

(job satisfaction won't pay the bills).
