Thread regarding CVS layoffs

We are limiting good people in favor of colleague availability.

This whole colleague availability issue has been a big topic of discussion on this site for quite some time. However, we need to stop judging people SOLELY based on how many hours they can or can't work. I know of some really good part-time people at cvs, who are seasoned, experienced, been at cvs for many years, and work harder and better than some full-time people. This is just my opinion, but I feel part-time people should be allowed to go as high up as operations manager. The store manager should be the only one required to be full time. We are limiting good people simply because they can't or don't want to go full time.

I can tell you this from experience... "There is ALOT more to working at cvs, than just coming in at 5,6, or 7am in the morning!" Just because a person doesn't want to work crazy, slave shifts, shouldn't limit how far they can go. Hours don't make the person, their work does! We also shouldn't be treating employees differently just because they have a family, or a life outside the store. Cvs is your JOB, but it shouldn't be your LIFE! Getting back on topic, my point is this... Their is something to be said for years of experience, and a person who is solid, hardworking, loyal, dedicated, shouldn't be looked at solely based on hours only. Thoughts?

With all the hours cuts (and all the cost cutting measures) I’m surprised cvs doesn’t hire more part timers. Since PT people get no benefits, (unless you pay for them) they’d save a ton of money! Part timers get no vacation time, and no holiday pay, etc. What it costs to have FT vs PT, cvs could save a boatload on payroll.

Will CVS even hire a candidate who actually gives part time availability? Although weekends and nights should be part of their availability, that is retail.

Here's an idea, if the front store had the same hours as the pharmacy, then scheduling probably would be less of an issue! RX gets to leave early every day!

All retail businesses are horrible because retail is a horrible business to work in. There’s not a retail company around that doesn’t care about anything except keeping the store open, even if it means screwing their employees in order to do so. Although cvs does seem to be one of the worst offenders when it comes to mistreating their employees.

Open availability and “CVS” open availability are two different things. Open availability means that a person is generally available when you need them. Until they find out what open availability means the cvs way. The cvs version of open availability means you being available 24/7/365 no restrictions no matter what, AND the cvs version of open availability also means that you have NO family, NO life and the store is your life now.

The moment you work for cvs they treat you like nothing else matters but the store. I have a co-worker of mine who had to miss a funeral of a family member, simply because they couldn’t get off work. Apparently someone dying isn’t enough to get a day off anymore.

Now do you see my point? If cvs would offer it’s employees flexible scheduling, instead of treating them like only the store matters, then people might be a little happier.

Problem is we hire them when they say they have open availability. Then 2 months later they hate the schedule and then turn it around and say "oh I'm only available at these times." Everyone trying to make their own schedule. Sorry, unfortunately that's not how retail works. Do as I do. Get out of cvs and if you're feeling extra confident, get out of retail in general. I've got a new sales position lined up. That's an easy out of the retail world. The grass is greener folks.

@ZZ62FRe-1kqb... Agreed, except that some of these problems with scheduling issues are the direct result of corporates way of doing things, better known as “the cvs way”. You see a relationship is a two way street, but at cvs it’s a one way street, their way. Corporates stubborn refusal to bend even one inch on scheduling, has led to people trying to create their own schedules. I see this even with FULL-time people. I know a few full timers at cvs, who don’t want to do nights, weekends, and holidays, but still want all the vacation time, sick pay, and other benefits you get. And so if a part timer is willing to do some of those shifts, why can’t they be given the opportunity to move up the ladder a little?

The problem is most peoples availability usually doesn't include nights and weekends, which should be non negotiable. Maybe not all but MOST of these people with availability issues are refusing to work these shifts. They are trying to creste their own schedule. Like I said not all but MOST

Well said! Too much emphasis on being available 24/7!
