Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

Different stores like different companies?

This company has always been so inconsistent. Some stores run fine, others are constant anarchy. It's hard to communicate problems because it varies so much from district to district and region to region. Regionally, especially, it's almost like different companies.

Okay, can somebody tell me if these store where everything runs fine really still exist? And if they do, what is your secret? And it's not as simple as incompetent managers, because our managers are great and they manage to do what they can with what's available, but they're not magicians.

@8szv, not my criteria, it’s the website rules. Know this for sure cause they nuked my post and blocked my IP for naming a colleague, had to switch to proxy in order to post.

But if you don’t believe me, you can look it up under their “unwelcome content” section of the content rules. When they say the content is prohibited if it encourages violence towards individuals, they mean that personal insults will be nuked. And they also say content is prohibited if it is personal info, that means all PII (personally identifiable info) will be nuked as well.

But you are welcome to try, we’ll see what happens.

Stop posting insults and personally identifiable data, that’s not allowed here (names, initials + location or anything else that can pinpoint to a particular individual for certain)

Texts mentioning “certain” regions have stayed up. I’ve never read anyone’s name or initials here. Seemed to me it’s allowed. But, thank you, for coming up with your own criteria for what’s “not allowed”

Good for you. You had a horrible Mgr and you left !

So many cling to that job like it’s the only one. It’s only retail people ! Same as Target, KMart & WalMart ! Retail jobs are plentiful. If you stay , under bad management, it’s like staying in an abusive relationship. Have some self respect.

BN could care less about you. They threw thousands of career , full time employees out. You think they’ll treat you any different?! MA, TN, they’re all the same. Get out before they do you dirty too !

I reported dirty deals and inappropriate behavior to We Listen.

NOTHING WAS DONE.

However, within 2 weeks my hours were cut from 30-35 hours a week, to 10.

Previous poster asked “ does anybody care now?”

There’s your answer !

Lot of posts about how bad the TN region is run. I worked there a few years ago. I could list all kinds of improprieties ,but I’m sure , like other posts in this thread, it would be deleted. Because, it would be obvious, who was who. Yeah, lots of “under the table” deals and directives. Improper relationships. Something should’ve been done long ago. Corporate probably doesn’t care now. Does anyone care now? Lots have left. Inadequate replacements put in their place. The wrong people were gotten rid of.

Did you all write your reviews on the job sites like INDEED and CAREER BUILDER?

This is where you can really tell the truth and investors read it.

Posts disappeared? So does the company see this stuff? Crooked company covering up for crooked managers. Not surprised.

Plus they all knew for weeks who they were laying off. Anyone who stays with this failing company should expect nothing but the door very soon. I'm just glad I get the opportunity to tell everyone what a bunch of awful DMs and SMs have done nothing but make people miserable and helped to make their stores a bad memory.

Lots of posts disappeared from this thread. I saw them earlier and now, gone.

I didn’t write them.

But those who saw something happen ( I’d call that reputable sources) and others said they were told about it, Have been censored.

The truth is too much for some people.

Our DM is known for making deals with local publishers. Even if the book was on a return list we were told not to and to keep the display up. Sarah Evan’s Book was up for over a month.

How is axing payroll to reduce costs going into earnings not manipulating the business or massaging the books to give investors a false sense of the business' health? This company is constantly pulling the flowers and watering the weeds!

So when Simon & Schuster or HarperCollins pays BN for specific placement of product and it can't get there because of staffing issues, how is that right? Theft of service? I have zero doubt these id--ts play musical chairs with numbers, and I am sure some get bonuses off the practice. The board of directors is negligent. I am not sure who is worse off, the employee or the investor.

It's definitely been my experience that there are well-put-together stores and ones that are constantly on fire. The latter category is larger, by far, but it wouldn't be an honest assessment to say that every single store is a disaster. This almost always comes down to having a solid management team and a store manager/district manager who is willing to stand up for their employees. NOTE: THIS IS RARE, and sometimes they do get laid off for doing more for the workers and less about sales. I've witnessed this.

So, you have some individual, heroic humans who are single-handedly making THEIR stores liveable places, but overall the company is a trash dump.

When it comes to payroll crunches, however, it doesn't matter what kind of miracle workers you have. Things are going to fall apart, at least temporarily.

Dread our morning meetings. My region is a hot mess. My DM is always “God bless “trying to convince people he’s some kind of Christian And then treat people like c-ap. He’s good to our g-- manager though, probably afraid of a lawsuit. They go out to lunch and spent two, 2 1/2 hours and then come back to the store and complain about productivity. But that’s how it is down here in the south.(NC/TN)
