Thread regarding Anthem Inc. layoffs

Detailed info on how layoffs are done and what to expect

ANTHEM has removed or eliminated all organizational announcements on all the RIFs, reorganizations and changes. They are doing this on purpose and do NOT want the information in any hard copy or email that can be shared with the news media.

The RIFs are structured with getting an Outlook message with phone number and passcode to dial in. The message will say something in the subject line like : UPDATE, REORG UPDATE or similar, but as the word is out I am sure they have many more planned.

These heartless b--tards get on the call and give you some speal about maybe or not meeting recently, and then you hear the other dial-in come on, who is someone from HR. Then the HR person emails you a prepared pdf file for your RIF situation and package. They tell you to ask some questions and can email more later to the HR rep.

So does not matter what you say, they have had this RIF prepared for some time. They just want to get you done. You get 30 days notice, plus a package of supplemental unemployment of up to 26 weeks max (capped a few years ago no matter how many years you have served at the company). You have to apply for unemployment and they coordinate with you States UE and having to interview and apply for jobs and Anthem makes up the difference up to you current salary for your number of weeks. If you get a job before the period of time, you will only get 50% of remaining weeks minus any UE. So there is no severance package or lump sum. You only get UE every 2 weeks, and Anthem portion still direct deposit into you bank of supplemental.

What a place. This is how it all ends.

Your benefits for Medical, Dental, and Vision go until end of the month your supplemental ends, and deduct premium from pay.

You will get paid for your PTO days, but not sick or former supplemental short term disability days.

Hard to believe it has come down to this.

I had 34 years with the company. They dont care, and just want to replace you with 3 or more cheaper labor at Legato (Anthem company in India to replace contractors and associates), who the can pay a fraction of your salary and benefits. I'm sure the Legato team like the jobs and the minimal benefits packages, which might seem good for them.

They will keep doing this till all contractors and associates have been replaced. So BEWARE just because they did not get you in the earlier ways your time is coming to, and more if not all will be RIF'd.

Best to all other RIFs and future ones who are not even aware yet. Wake up though and get prepared.

@YU4QQT4-zss Re: COBRA questions

This is my perspective. I don't think UE and Supp impact COBRA. I've been getting info here: https://www.usa.gov/unemployment .

Your last day of employment is what's important for COBRA.

COBRA begins the date Unemployment begins.

(Note: The UE rep told me to Get the date UE begins from HR when they give you notice. Specifically ask for the date because it can be prorated. )

Go here > https://www.dol.gov/sites/default/files/ebsa/about-ebsa/our-activities/resource-center/faqs/cobra-continuation-health-coverage-consumer.pdf

Look at Q4 >

Eligibility for COBRA continuation coverage won't limit your eligibility for Marketplace coverage or

for a tax credit. You can apply for Marketplace coverage at HealthCare.gov or by calling 1-800-318-

2596 (TTY 1-855-889-4325). To qualify for special enrollment in a Marketplace plan, you must select a plan within 60 days before or 60 days after losing your job-based coverage.

Good luck and post back if you learn anything different.

Re: Do you need to show proof?

Good question. I'm not sure actually - Not sure how you'd prove it.

Might want to call your State UE office and ask how the process works (carefully).

You have to apply to at least 2 positions (doesn't matter where, just need 2), and report that info to your State UE every week by Saturday.

In VA, UE doesn't share that information.

  • But it's important to register with UE immediately (e.g. don't wait a month to do it.) There's a reason and you don't want to wait. Call your State UE office and get some advise before it's your turn. You'll feel a little more empowered when you get the email.

So sad to see Anthem going down this path. It used to be a wonderful place to work. But now, everyone is on edge, waiting for their turn to get the call. The executive team should be ashamed of themselves. Yeah you’ll get your $$$, but you are going to bring Anthem down in the process.

"Are the lay offs just in IT?"

No, RIF's are taking place across the company, all areas. Everyone is at risk. IT has been the hardest hit so far, but no one is safe.

I’ve been on UE before after the dotcom bust. Every state is probably different. In my state you just had to fill out a single survey question certifying that you had looked for a job that week.

to the one that wrote this post-You have to apply for unemployment and they coordinate with you States UE and having to interview and apply for jobs . I had heard you only need to apply because quite often you don't hear anything back once you do apply. Do they ask where you applied . Do you need to show proof?

Karma will get them when US goes to single payer in the next 5 years. Then bye bye to all the H1B folks. Same is for Legato but will be too late. They are for sure downloading all the PHI data they have access to.

Thank you so much for this valuable information. Do you know whether medical/dental/vision coverage during supplemental unemployment is considered COBRA? Or is it a continuation of the same coverage you had while employed, with COBRA kicking in after supplemental ends? Thanks again and best of luck in the future.

Anthem has become an evil empire motivated by greed and profit at the cost of associates who served this company with many years of loyalty. It’s not in my nature to speak ill of other people but will take exception for Anthem Leadership and say “To Hell with all of them” for what they are doing to this company and it’s associates and hope karma gets all of them in the end.

I moved to Atlanta for the job at Anthem because they said this was going to be the IT hub. Two years later, I got the exact RIF notice described earlier. It makes no sense to me. Why build a brand new building in Midtown and promise the city you're hiring 2000 people?
