Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

In what areas does AIG plan to cut its workforce the most?

Any word on what parts of the company could be impacted the most, or is there at least some logic by which we can determine weather we’re safe or no? I imagine that parts that can be outsourced easily, could be the biggest hitting point.

The on-premise cost for hardware, software, support staff, server space, rent, utilities are higher than the cost for migrating to the cloud. Don't forget there are also other benefits too such as operational eficiencies or else cloud service won't be such big business.

https://www.cio.com/article/3267571/it-governance-critical-as-cloud-adoption-soars-to-96-percent-in-2018.html:

"In 2018, cloud computing went mainstream. Virtually all organizations (96 percent) use it in one way or another. However, studies show that as users gain cloud maturity, they tend to move from hybrid cloud scenarios – which comprise both private and public clouds – toward multi-cloud landscapes spread across a multitude of service providers. Indeed, according to Rightscale’s 2018 State of the Cloud Report, 81 percent of enterprises already have a multi-cloud strategy in place."

Eagle. Middle-market, Fin Lines, Lexington, Personal Lines (all PL companies). That is for starters. They have to cut, cut, cut. Above are division not writing any business and has a poor combined ratio. Good Bye!

You do realize that cloud is 4 to 5 times more expensive to physical footprints ? If you’ve seen the quotes you would know.

There's alot of $ to be saved in infrastructure staff doing change activities and server cost once the company moves to the cloud. And I do agree that it's short-sighted and premature for them to cut the IT folks who are needed to migrate to AWS. It will be a big, risky effort and needs experienced staff to plan and implement. When you trim your staff to the bones, mistakes will happen and you don't want to make mistake on the foundation of your systems/platforms.

They did it backwards... should have started from the top down instead of from the bottom up. This unit has a large working class who in most cases earn their keep. Executives tried to make it into a robot w/out resources - had unrealistic goals - and frankly lost their way (over complicated itself) .. now look at it ! (But not giving these guys and gals a pass - in all fairness the turn over at AIG is way too high for any kind of long term growth.)

At first going to the cloud means more people. It is a large effort, very short sited of AIG to get rid of people before the move to the cloud.
