Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Is it true that mostly older employees are targeted?

From what I’ve seen at my location a majority of the affected folks were over 40 and had been with the company for quite some time. Is it the same at other locations and if it is, how is it possible that they can do this, and escape being sued?

Post ID: @XXNrQWW-jxs you really don't have much insight into this company. Not sure what line of business you are in but you apparently shouldn't be in insurance but rather some field that is only digital. You can only hit a restart button so many times and this kind of insight is what has brought this company down

The individual who posted about AIG’s older workforce inability to adapt to technology as being a culprit for the company’s failures is so uniformed, it is just sad. I do not know what task they perform but in the world I live in large casualty accounts, technology cannot make up for horrible management practices. The company attempted to adapt cutting-edge ideas when they introduced AQI scores but found out quickly that you cannot use automated underwriting for complicated risks like you do for personal automotive insurance.

They have been slowly replacing experienced underwriters with newbies and service centers. I believe many of these individuals are talented but lack the knowledge to make a difference. Part of the reason expertise is so important in this realm is because you must be able manage relationships and demonstrate your abilities to the insured. Technology cannot do that for you!

Presently, I am finalizing terms to leave AIG and get off of this train wreck. However, I just wanted to respond to those who actually believe technology, and not people can actually save the company.

While I agree that the older folks make a bit more, cost the company money in insurance for their illnesses, etc. I truly believe they let anyone go that complains, or gets too close to the truth..Younger ones really don't care what is going on, they do what they are told, then play on their phones. Older people are much more wiser to the ways of what is happening, and ask a lot of questions, thus deemed a trouble maker. It doesn't really matter, if you make this riff, they will get you sooner or later. They seem to keep something going at minimum until they have their ducks in a row, then they destroy the whole department (IT).

For the person who said older AIG vets can’t handle the new “digital age” - newsflash: the technology at AIG is terrible. Antiquated systems, ridiculous glitches and we don’t even use OneDrive. There nothing happening from a tech standpoint to scare anyone over 40.

Come on already that's ridiculous you can't have all young people and no older people in a company it's all about the mix what happened to diversity look at the other cultures who respect the wisdom of the elders. For Heaven's Sake this is ridiculous we hired a CEO that was 70 years old and yes I agree about taking a reduced wage because I would have done that to finish out my career this is what happens when you use outside Consultants to figure out who the let-go there's no consideration about the employees because they don't know who you are you're just a number if the company really care they would try to find people who are top performers other positions in the company maybe try to retrain a little bit and again pay cuts would have probably also been an option but they just want to kick you out because they don't care

Last post - I too don't understand the fat pay, renovations, and jets, etc. In terms of the older worker most likely being let go because they are more seasoned and hence have high wages - Why then don't they offer the older workers the job at a reduced wage? I bet most would take it.

It is not that they target a certain age group, it is just that older and experienced people generally make more than younger and inexperienced. So when you are cutting dollars, it is easier to meet the dollars with the higher paid people. Having said that, I do not understand the executive pays and jet purchases and the money spent for executives, e.g. floor renovation for the 24th floor of 175 water, etc. The executives are taking money from the workers to pay for their stuff. They are ruining so many lives and families to pay themselves. A shame. Morally wrong.

IMO you need a mix of new and experienced. That said great and fresh ideas take $. More than aig can or is willing to spend.

It won't be popular opinion. But frankly in AIG. The reason AIG can't keep up with the market and technology is due to the people. A lot of people have worked there like forever, and when the digital age dawn upon AIG these people can't keep pace. Kudos to those who could.

It's time for AIG to hit the restart button. They need young minds who are born in this digital age. People who can rejuvenate the company by bringing fresh ideas and implementing them quickly. It's worth the risk.

Of course they are targeting older people. Not sure what triggered this war on older people they're not always going after people at top dollar either I wasn't with the company that long and I was laid off but I'm older I was a top performer as well and I certainly wasn't at a pay grade that I had any input for mgmt to say well let's get rid of her because she's sympathetic to the old regime. Blatent discrimination.

Correct. I exceeded all my goals at age 62 and was laid off 4 months ago even though younger peers did not. And also correct that they sprinkle in the required number of younger workers to mask what’s really happening.

I actually heard from a Manager that they were looking at older people.

They escape by adding a small % of employees under age 35 to the group. The severance letter includes a list of all the titles and ages of employees let go for the group you belong and you can easily tell that most are over 40, with a sprinkling of 20-30 yos. THAT's how they justify that they are laying off as a result of ageism.
