Our new sardines sized cubicles.. oops I mean “collaborative workspace”

I think our business whiner I mean newsmaker CEO of the year should have to also sit in one of those sardine cans they are calling collaborative workspaces. Anyway, I’m pretty excited if this means I can literally work from wherever the hell I want because I’m most definitely not planning on spending much time in those sardine cans.

-eqqt, I was referring to monitor configurations in breakout rooms, privacy rooms and other common areas. I made the comment "the current workspace configurations leave me anchored to my cubicle" which was acknowledging that I would have dual monitors in my cubicle. The tablets were pitched as a way for us to be mobile and to work from anywhere within the building but the reality is many of can only work out of cubicles. If things get too noisy, too stinky or other distractions arise in neighbourhood then there isn't much we can do to escape that. Yes I've had conversations with people in the past about scents, yes I've had conversations with people in the past about noise, some were reasonable and others didn't see themselves as the problem.

I'm looking forward to the colaborative reservoir design on my tablet. I work with SCM now, but I think I could be an incredible reservoir designer, I'd put way more oil in there then the current team does. I don't need two screens for that and I can do it from a breakfast nook too!

Give me a break. You need to calm the hell down with this how many monitors do I get c-ap. Really? Do you work for Cenovus? Then go on inc and go to the Brookfield page. It says right there under the specs and features that we will have “ two displays on the same monitor arms we use today, with the option for more or fewer depending on your work needs. Most staff will have a laptop or tablet with a monitor built in, which may lessen the need for additional displays” like I said. Calm down. Jeezus. Stop making a big deal out of something that isn’t even a deal!

-ctxz, if dual monitors aren't required then why do so many people have them? I don't need to swarm my tablet with 24 others for the email I'm composing, but what I do need is to have 2 big displays so I can work on an email on 1 screen while looking at a spreadsheet or document on the other. The current workspace configurations leave me anchored to my cubicle.

-bsxs. The new tablets are awesome, who needs two screens. If you are using two screens you are inefficient, besides some of the new tech being testing is mind blowing. Wirelessly connecting up to 25 tablets operating in parallel to create a computing "swarm", the collaboration potential is staggering. Literally anyone will be able to collaborate for reservoir modelling, simulation and forcasting. The development opportunities are almost endless.

@X0HrDnN-awmq, that was just one day, give it a few months. People will start getting on each others nerves with their annoying habits, noises, smells, colds/flus and other distractions. Meeting/breakout areas will get booked up as people start realizing they are there.

Correct me if I'm wrong but from the sketches there are no individual privacy areas with dual monitors which are needed by many to do their roles. The mobility of a tablet is good in theory but a single 12" screen is impractical for the majority of us.

Hey, so lucky for you, its not all that bad. I went over to Brookfield on Monday to hook up with a pal and check out her new space. It's actually pretty frickin awesome...I mean the biggest complaint might be that at this time of year when the sun is low, you are going to need to lower the shades or put on your ray bans.....or your cheap rip offs. the other complaint might be that there isn't enough fridge space to store my weeks' worth of lunches etc...i totally get that...new year and damn it, I'm going to EAT HEALTHY. anyway, not sure how that will get figured out but I'm hoping cenovus will consider that whole supply and demand thing and if necessary, get another fridge on the floor. I totally understand the apprehension to a cube environment. I went to Floor 24 at the bow and yah, it was like, 'what the hell?' but when i went over to Brookfield on Monday it was actually pretty awesome. lots of space...lots of places to go and work if you needed privacy or didn't feel like being distracted by the convos going on around you and lots of options if you wanted to brainstorm with others. I'm actually giving it a thumbs up...i didn't think I would! If you get the chance, go over there and check it out...not sure if we all have access, I had to get my buddy to meet me in the lobby to get up to her floor.

Trust me, I work my a$$ off to have a positive impact on the share price. The problem at CVE is that their are too many id--ts with too much power that make decisions that erode value and have created the horrible culture that we now see.

-horrible Hedge decisions

-horrible real estate leases

-selling assets for 60 cents on the dollar

-cramming "valued" employees that have survived 7-8+ rounds of layoffs into cheap chicken crates

-increasing management bonuses while decreasing employee bonuses

-nickel and diming benefits

I could go on, and on. Stop defending the indefensible.

The common workers are what makes any company, and the sooner CVE management clues into that the sooner we can rebuild this company and shareholder value.

Saying we should be lucky to have jobs deflects from the issue that regardless of who is sitting in those cubicles there will be a loss of productivity. Take 10% to 20% of Calgary staff salaries and that will give you a rough idea of the cost of lost productivity.

First time reading this site and so disappointed with my Cenovus peers. Some of you sound very mis-informed and entitled. Quit placing blame, your time would be better utilized finding ways to increase the share price. Have you been to the 3rd floor? If not, you should (heard about it from the Brookfield group with multiple representatives from the company). The team will tell you about how collaborative the workspace is and can’t imagine being in an office, let alone a cubicle again. Have you informed yourselves on what crude prices have been prior to what leadership did to bring them back to market? And how about you consider being happy that you have a job?

2eht,

Bangs? Is that you?

Also, are you getting an ultra fat bonus for preaching about how amazing the new matchboxes you call collaborative workspaces are?

So is this the future? We build bigger and taller structures like The Bow and Brookfield, only to stuff professional and technical staff into smaller and smaller spaces. I don't understand how management continues to get fleeced and sold on this whole concept of stuffing your employees into chicken crates and selling it as collaborative space. It's pure and simple a fleece job to save money, and we all know it. What is collaborative about smelling and hearing your coworkers farts and stinky lunch? Cubicles were invented in the 60's and the irony is that they were designed to actually PREVENT open office concepts.

Hey 2eht,

Why don't you go hang out on 24 beside the cube mock-up so you can explain to us peons why that is more than enough space for sitting down and staring at a screen all day. I'm sure many would appreciate your wisdom and guidance on how to manage the new smaller spaces. I know I would enjoy seeing you there, in your one size too tight expensive suit, with that sh!t eating grin that needs to get wiped off your face. You must have drank the Kool Aid on the idea of collaborative workspaces and cubicle farms!!! Guess what? They don't work. They crush morale and ruin productivity. Nice work you incompetent CLT yes man!

Saving some floor space at the cost of lost productivity is a poor trade-off. 20% larger cubicles would have made a significant difference.

Don’t forget this is the same clueless CLT that backed the Olympic bid for calgary and sent a note to us all to back it as well so their rich kids could play. Sorry guys you can’t even get that right. They are out of touch.

Your company and shareholders are depending on you. That’s rich coming from the CLT that has so many expensive mistakes. We were counting on you all and you:

  • sunk our company into massive debt

  • have done 8 rounds of layoffs

  • cut bonuses for people below mgr level but all executives keep theirs

  • reduced employee benefits

  • signed the worse lease agreements in the industry that has almost sunk our company

  • had hedges that lost the company how much money again?

  • been voted one of the top ten worst companies to work for (worldwide)

  • prompted VPs while laying people off on more than one occasion

And that’s just a few of your epic mistakes.

But yes you whiny employees who ask for the world and to not be crammed into a cardboard box to save money to cover the CLT errors. You are bad people.

And now back to your regularly scheduled layoffs.

You sit at a desk and stare at a computer all day. How much space do you need to do that? Or are you worried about others seeing what you are actually doing on your computer all day? Be grateful for the paycheck and get to work. Your company and shareholders are depending on you.

I really think the incompetent individual(s) that selected and signed off on these cubicles should be forced to stand on 24 and explain/justify to the employees of Cenovus why we are being forced into the ridiculously small, cheap ergonomical disasters that are our new cubicles.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the new cubicles on 24 I suggest you go check them out. That way, you can start looking for a new place to work and walk out with your head held high on the day your bonus gets deposited. They are the most ridiculous cubicles I've ever seen. We are not insurance salesman or telemarketers!!! I've seen nicer cubicles at the local registry office!

Nope, HR is busy with their fake reviews over there so they should be fine. They’re either trying to make people quit or don’t care if they do. Only other potential reason for this is we are so screwed for cash that they have no choice but to cut corners on cubicles to save money.

I don't think the tiny cubicles will cause anyone to quit. They could however move CVE up a few spots on the global list of top-10 worst places to work!

Not sure what they were thinking going with these itsy-bitsy-teeny-tiny cubicles. I foresee a good number of people voluntarily leaving after the bonus is paid out.

Why the cramped cubicles when CVE controls more empty office space than every other company in downtown Calgary?
