Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Gladly leaving

I am gladly taking this package as a manager with over 30 years. I am one of the few mgrs that can do my job with my eyes closed as I have been doing this job for over 20 years. I agree that a lot of talent is leaving but there was 0 appreciation for the 150% I gave day in and day out....

Next happy chapter of my life coming up....

@rel nodding my head in agreement. Thanks for the smiles. Excellent post. The Millenials' will figure it out one day while they are being pushed out the door by the generation after them. Enjoy your retirement. I know I will enjoy mine.

Op and @VWc0gq4-rel, I enjoyed both of your posts! I don't understand why some of these other posters had to be mean and spiteful. I, myself, narrowly escaped the Infosys cluster. I am also looking forward to a new chapter in my life.

I think that you may be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. Its all about the benjamins for me and you. When the company no longer returns loyalty then you are no need to be loyal to them. You need to think about yourself and your family dude.

@VWc0gq4-xns I think you may be confused, who do you think feeds the company. Our hands are the ones getting bit. I’m very thankful for all of the opportunity and compensation I have received for ALL of my hard work, but I’m extremely disappointed that we cannot at least get a little transparency as to the true future direction. I would more appreciate someone telling me “ we’re going in this direction and we’ll be eliminating These positions, going to closing these offices and outsourcing these business groups... now, do you want to stay or go?” At least then we can make a truly informed decision that we do not have to worry about regretting later. Iatrbt we entitled to a little honesty at least . I personally do not want to leave; however, I don’t know what’s behind curtain #2. A little transparency may help them achieve the cuts they need and desire! I may want to leave if I New my fate.

For the life of me I can’t understand why highly compensated employees feel the need to publicly bite the hand that fed them for so many years.

I get the disappointment and stress over having to make such a decision, because I’m in the same boat. My option is to take the VSP, relocate, or sever with the standard package. Verizon has been good to me over the years and though it’s sad to leave, I’m getting a much friendlier handshake than any other job I’ve had. They do not owe me anything. Remember that these are first world problems we’re facing. Some people in this world have it tough.

Dear Gladly Leaving, I wish you well and enjoy your Retirement going forward. I came over from the T Layoff site to see if anything was different, and No, sad to say there not. The Millenials are still whining and whimpering at the Boomers to move on, until one day their time comes and it makes me smile.......because it will, no matter who they work for at the time!

As a Manager I understand the 150% ref because most don’t take their full allotment of vacation time, cancel many fridays off because the work just won’t make the ‘’target end date’’ otherwise. You’re in by 8am and leaving work by 8pm because that vital conference call reaches across huge time zones that the ‘whiners’ never know about. Being good at what you do has a reverse effect, especially on family.

The irony that you probably ‘mentor’ many of these Millenials, over the years, to eventually fill your job, has never escaped me. The ignorant perceive that your skills are 20 years out of date but will one day stroke their egos by trying to convince everyone that longevity denotes expertise and knowledge....and that part will actually be true, and you prove that point.

And $3mil in a 401K is not far fetched when you consider five stock splits since 1990, consistent dollar cost averaging into a dividend stock buying even more share of itself, and not to forget a few stock options offered along the way. And last, consider that the stock market has increased 10 fold since you began.

Wait, do you hear that Millenials? Mom just called up to your room......DINNER!

I’m at 750k with 20 years. I saved poorly for a few of them but close to maxed out recently and expect I’m at a lower pay rate. I’d probably be close to double what I have if I had maxed out early and of course a higher salary would have helped too :-) 3 million is possible. I mean fidelity says I’ll live in a box out of money a few years into retirement or have tens of millions of dollars when I die based on their complex predictions.

$3 million in a 401k seems a little high working at VZ , but if it’s true great job .

Hey OP, after reading your post regarding how you see yourself, it does not surprise me when you say your eyes have been closed for 20 years.

Hey guys just giving you a quick note, was given voluntary retirement at Altice at end of 2016, they gave me 185000 3 weeks pay for 35 years of service paid all sick time and vacation time, If your over 62 it's time to go, it's the nature of the business be it Altice or Verizon, take the money and run. There is nothing better then retirement and if you get bored plenty of part time or full time jobs out there.

#OP, why leave or take the package if you can do the job with your eyes closed. It seems it would be the opposite and coast through many more years.

I would think they appreciate you since they have been paying you for 20yrs.

I personally have been here 25 yrs, and I do appreciate what vz pays me well and I to can do my job that they pay me for, so will stick around and collect the good $$ for a bit longer.

I'm right there with the OP. I've got 22 years with the company and while it's been a good (for the most part) 22 years, this offer pays me the year I would have worked until retirement end of 2019, and now I don't have to! I'm not overweight nor diabetic. I'm young for my age, technically savvy, healthy, fit, and soooo ready to enjoy the freedom that will come without having to work. And being paid 60 weeks to do it. Can't believe they are paying me to leave! Woo hoo.

Thank you! We need to clear out the Boomers like you with an over-inflated opinion of your ability. The truth is, your "skills" are 20 years out of date, and the money VZ would have to spend on your obesity and diabetes (and "personal trainer") could be better spent getting us bean bag chairs and more safe quiet spaces. Good run. You miked it to the max. Now see-ya bro.
